    Company Description: NAMI San Diego & Imperial Counties (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a nonprofit organization that provides free education, support services, and advocacy to improve the quality of life of everyone affected by mental illnesses.

    Primary Responsibilities/Function: This position is part of a new program designed to help individuals adjust, build community, and learn how to live in their new housed environment. The part-time Housing Educator is responsible for facilitating programming in clients' homes as well as community-based settings and learning labs. While in the learning labs, the part-time Housing Educators will facilitate groups or educational experiences that focus on building skills of the participants, so they transition smoothly into safe and dignified housing in a less restrictive environment. The part-time Housing Educator will work in collaboration with the Cooperation for Supportive Housing (CSH) team to address housing transition concerns and tailor learning opportunities to benefit clients. Each part-time Housing Educator will see their clients regularly in their homes to support in sustainable skill-building by leveraging their lived experience and knowledge of community resources to meet their individualized goals.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Track client progress and report to lead.
    • Work directly with new tenants to ensure a successful transition into housing and access to culturally responsive behavioral health recovery services.
    • Responsible for facilitating programing that includes, but is not limited to: recovery, ADLs, computer literacy, financial literacy, how to sustain housing (ex. paying rent on time, taking trash out, how to communicate with neighbors), nutrition and cooking groups, health advocacy and navigation, peer support groups, satisfaction groups, in-house community groups like holiday parties, board games, movie nights, book clubs, art evenings, and occasional community outings.
    • Work in collaboration with NAMI Residential Program Manager and CSH team to research and develop a user-friendly health and educational resources that will support the participants needs and interests.
    • Take on a set case load and meet in person on a consistent basis.
    • Reach out to community resources, programs and local businesses to build opportunities for volunteerism for program participants as well as strengthen community relationships with their neighbors.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Accountability: Reports to Residential Program Manager.

    • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
    • Ability to walk up steps.
    • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at times.

    Minimum Requirements, including linguistic and cultural skills, education, experiences, licenses and certifications:

    • Experience in human services or equivalent educational or life expertise is required.
    • Lived experience of homelessness or housing insecurity, or being a direct support to a loved one who has experienced homelessness or housing insecurity.
    • Lived mental health experience for self or support of a loved one.
    • Peer Support specialist certification preferred.
    • Must have a satisfactory driving record or proficiency in public transportation and ability and willingness to utilize public transportation to arrive on time to up to 2 sites a day.
    • Able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
    • Basic knowledge of computer software (Microsoft Office, Word, Excel) and web navigation.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
    • Reliable and consistent attendance.
    • Fluency in English required; fluency in Spanish or other threshold language preferred.
