The University of California, Berkeley seeks a collaborative, service-oriented individual with demonstrated library management, resource sharing, and user services experience to advance the Library's engagement with research and teaching through support from resource sharing and interlibrary loan services.

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation's premier public universities.

A highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 25,500 undergraduate students, 10,300 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty.

With a collection of more than 13 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills.

The Library's Resource Sharing Division (RSD) - comprised of two departments; Borrowing Services and Lending Services - supports the University's research and teaching mission by enhancing access and use of collections, and sharing of scholarly and research library resources.

By providing access to the UC Berkeley Library collections, RSD supports faculty, staff, students, and independent researchers from the UC Berkeley community and around the world

The Head of the Resource Sharing Division (RSD) provides leadership for enhancing and evolving the vision, scope, operations, and user-centered services of the division across the Library.

As part of this work, this role collaborates with the Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Digital Initiatives and Information Technology to shape the future direction of RSD for the university.

This position directly manages, supervises, and coaches the two department heads in the division who supervise the career library staff (about 15 FTE) and student employees (5 FTE) in the division.

The position is also responsible for managing, tracking, budgeting, and allocating the assigned L7 budget for the RSD division.

The Division Head works collaboratively with division staff and relevant Library stakeholders to assess strengths and weaknesses in operations and services, and determine priorities and innovations that align with the academic mission of the university.

The Division Head has the overall responsibility for managing the interlibrary loan systems and the Automated Fulfillment Network (AFN) within the UC Berkeley Systemwide Integrated Library System (SILS), in close collaboration with Access Services and Library IT divisions.

The position leads, supports, and coordinates the design and development of policies and workflows that enable RSD to locate, obtain, provide access to, and lend library and information resources in all formats, fields of study, and languages.

Mindful of current trends related to resource sharing services, research, and collections at an academic research library, the Division Head will work in partnership with colleagues in the Library, across campus, and at other institutions to play a guiding role in initiatives that support the current and future resource sharing needs of faculty and students.

The position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Digital Initiatives and Information Technology and participates as a member of the AUL's management team to guide and coordinate strategic directions, programs, services, and work on issues to create consistency, service excellence, and ongoing improvement across divisions.

The Division Head, where appropriate, also serves as leader for special initiatives and projects that are high priorities for the Library and is a member of the Library Roundtable, an important forum for information sharing and discussions between the Library senior leadership team and the next layer of leadership from all units of the UC Berkeley Library.

The position works closely with the AUL for Scholarly Resources, AUL for Educational Initiatives and User Services, Access Services division, Library IT division, Collections Services division, and other Library divisions/libraries, UC libraries, and California Digital Library (CDL).

The Head of RSD manages the overall operations of UC Berkeley's Resource Sharing Division including Google Books Library Project and systems/platforms used for lending and borrowing services.

Develops and/or administers resource sharing and related policies, services/systems, and programs that have a large impact on campus and the UC System.

Determines RSD staffing levels and mixture of staff and students to realize optimal efficiencies and cost effectiveness.

Manages all aspects of UC Berkeley's compliance with interlibrary loan (ILL) codes, laws and regulations, as well as cooperative agreements between UC Berkeley and other libraries (domestic and foreign).

Monitors emerging library user services trends, with an emphasis on interlibrary loans in various formats, document delivery, and recommends service changes or improvements.

Our organization continues to evolve in the rapidly changing world of higher education and information resources and services, and thus the Division Head must be adaptable, forward-looking, and a good change-management leader.

To be an effective manager, the Division Head will be a fair, progressive leader to RSD staff; lead division-wide and library-wide discussions; aid in creating and communicating Library policies; manage personnel and financial matters; contribute to division-wide and library-wide priority setting and project management; encourage ongoing staff development; and foster an environment of collaboration, creative thinking, and continuous improvement.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, and work effectively in a shared decision-making environment.

the successful candidate will show evidence or promise of such contributions to the Library, campus, UC system, and profession.

The UC Berkeley Library is committed to supporting and encouraging a multicultural environment and seeks candidates who can make positive and imaginative contributions in a context of broad diversity.

Librarians are entitled to appropriate professional development leave, vacation leave, sick leave, and all other benefits granted to non-faculty academic personnel.

The University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans in addition to other benefits.

As a management position, this librarian position is not represented by a bargaining unit and is covered by the UC Academic Personnel Manual (APM).

The position is primarily an on-site position, with partial remote/telework permitted.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Minimum of five years of professional library experience
Experience and familiarity with using an integrated library system and/or an interlibrary loan and/or document delivery system
Management and/or coordination experience in an academic library environment

Master's degree from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent international degree
Experience coordinating and/or supervising and/or leading librarians and/or career staff such as (not limited to) hiring, training, supervising, delegating, evaluating, coaching, and motivating staff
Strong management skills including demonstrated skills in decision-making, leadership, initiative, and problem-solving
