    Visual Arts Department Artist Instructor CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half-Day Program

    20 hour per week with benefits position


    General Purpose:


    Under the direction of the Visual Arts Department Head and Administration to be a practicing artist who will plan, prepare and deliver educational curriculum and instructional lessons based on the Elements and Principles of Visual Art making in traditional and non-traditional Life Drawing & Painting, Ceramics, 3D Design, AP 2D & 3D Studio Art, Printmaking, and/or Activism in the Arts.

    Experience working with high school students of all skill levels and modalities is beneficial to a candidate's successful transition into our unique pre-professional intensive arts program.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Identifies long and short-term individual student and class objectives, prepares and writes lesson plans and student performance evaluations. Selects appropriate learning materials including texts, tests, supplements, audiovisual materials current with continued advancement in creative software.
    • Creates a safe environment for learning, follows program procedures, maintains records in a timely fashion. Develops project examples, exhibits student works in progress throughout the school, maintains inventory of studio supplies, maintains upkeep and reports maintenance needs for the classroom.
    • Devise curriculum which implements the Elements and Principles of Art, by effectively promoting student engagement in a pre-professional art learning environment. Provides instruction to students using methods and practices which best meet predetermined objectives in the Visual Arts. Promoting analytical thinking, teaching effective ways to collaborate, while also providing opportunities for individual achievement to be exhibited.
    • Applies appropriate diagnostic and assessment techniques which inform students and parents of the expectations for assessment. Periodically assesses student accomplishment of objectives and reviews assessment results with students and parents.
    • Participates in student placement auditions and contributes to the ever-evolving curriculum advancements necessary to meet students' needs for continued development of techniques practiced in visual arts conceptualism.
    • Interacts with students, parents, school counselors and other personnel to communicate progress and accomplishments made by students based on educational goals set by curriculum and program expectations.
    • Digital documentation of works of art in progress and completed work for each student enrolled in the instructors' courses.
    • Maintain AP teaching certification or participate in AP workshops necessary to obtain certification for AP 2D & 3D Studio Art and/or Art History.

    Education requirements:
    BS/BA degree in Education or a BFA with emphasis in appropriate discipline or equivalent required.


    Eligibility for a Connecticut State Department of Education Adjunct Arts Instructor Permit required, requirements for permit eligibility: (1) hold a bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education accredited by the Board of Governors of Higher Education, or regionally accredited, (2) have a minimum of three years of work experience in the arts or one year of work and two years of specialized schooling related to the applicant's artistic specialty, and (3) at least one hundred eighty hours of cumulative experience working with children in a private or public setting, including, but not limit to, afterschool programs, group lessons, children's theater, studio lessons, and artist-in-residence programs, or at least two years' experience as a full-time faculty member at an institution of higher education or been employed by an eligible inter-district magnet school prior to July 1,2011 and for at least one year.


    The following credentials are preferred:
    Experience teaching high school students drawing, painting, art history, sculpture and digital media.

    Must have diagnostic and assessment skills; in addition, be knowledgeable in the application of subject matter, developing critical thinking concepts in art making and have a willingness to learn how to implement our program culture of Taking Risks, Embracing Failure and Celebrating Differences into the curriculum and everyday practice.
