    Job Description

    Division Description:

    The Chief of Staff Office (COS) is within the Executive Director Division of the SFMTA and operates at a tactical, strategic and operational level, working with the executive and senior management teams of the agency to advance key strategic initiatives, communications and relationships. The COS is responsible for leading key multi-divisional projects; managing and tracking strategic initiatives; monitoring goal and objective achievement through measurements of benchmarks and the analysis of agency data; supporting the Director of Transportation in relations with the mayor, San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the media; and developing key agency strategic internal and external messaging.

    Position Description:

    COS Strategic and Internal Communications Team members inform and engage the public, customers, elected officials, key partners and our own employees about the services the SFMTA provides to San Francisco. They are strategic, skillful writers and content producers, strong communicators and creative thinkers. The team focuses on the SFMTA's distinctive culture, values and approach to the big transportation policy issues of the day. They shape the SFMTA's stories, the ordinary and the extraordinary, to shine a light on what goes on at the SFMTA and how the agency is advancing San Francisco's transportation goals.

    The Public Relations Assistant will support the Internal Communications team to keep employees informed about the agency's vision, goals and values, new policies and practices, training opportunities and equity programs, and other initiatives. Their communications messages will instill a sense of pride and belonging among SFMTA employees, and their emphasis will be on reaching employees who don't regularly access their work email accounts. The Public Relations Assistant will use a variety of communications tactics, including drafting print and electronic communications, supporting in-person outreach events, and assisting in the development of videos, infographics, photo stories and social media posts.

    Examples of Important and Essential Duties:

  • Works closely with staff from all divisions of the agency to develop internal communications that keep employees informed, inspired and connected to the SFMTA's mission and culture.
  • Assists with developing and updating content for the SFMTA intranet.
  • Drafts visual content such as videos and photo stories—for internal and external communication channels.
  • Designs drafts of posters to be displayed in SFMTA facilities and graphics for the SFMTA's digital signs.
  • Drafts blog posts, PPT presentations and all-staff emails to educate SFMTA employees and the public about agency policies and operations.
  • Creates social media posts that highlight SFMTA employees and agency successes.
  • Regularly visits SFMTA facilities to gather feedback from employees and provide them with information that helps them with their jobs.
  • Organizes and supports internal agency events such as employee recognition programs and town hall style meetings.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Nature of Work: Some positions may be subject to adverse weather conditions, walking long distances, and driving a vehicle to project sites and meetings. May require work on nights, weekends and/or holidays.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university

    Substitution:

    Experience in public relations, public affairs, public information, editorial, newspaper, magazine, radio, television, social media, digital engagement, advertising, marketing or similar work directly responsible for the preparation and/or dissemination of news and information in a variety of formats for internal and external communications may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis. Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

    Notes:

    1. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

    2. One (1) year full-time experience is equivalent to 2000 hours hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time experience.
