Associate Director, Health and Political Economy Project - New York, United States - The New School

    Default job background
    Description

The Health and Political Economy Project (HPEP) is seeking an Associate Director for an entrepreneurial, start-up team with substantial operational and programmatic responsibilities.

HPEP aims to chart a "new common sense" for health by recognizing common causes with parallel efforts in other sectors to move beyond neoliberalism. HPEP is co-chaired by Dave A. Chokshi-a physician, former New York City health commissioner, and senior fellow at the Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy-and Darrick Hamilton-the Henry Cohen Professor of Economics and Urban Policy at The New School. The Senior Director is Victor Roy-a physician, sociologist, former non-profit leader, and incoming Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania.

HPEP is housed in the "The Institute," led by Professor Hamilton, who is a global leader in efforts to shape a moral economy; the integration of HPEP with The Institute is purposeful, given how foundational racial equity and mobilizing political power are toward a more just health system. HPEP will create a forward-oriented community-and roadmap for change-to re-craft a political economy that promotes health for all.

We are looking for a driven team member excited to work alongside the Senior Director and Co-Chairs to help develop HPEP's field catalyzing work. The Associate Director's role will span building HPEP's operational capabilities and growing and implementing policy and organizing initiatives with key partners. A successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to health and/or economic justice-related work as well as experience in executing and managing programs. They will be self-starters who also enjoy working in collaborative teams. The candidate will also be excited about joining a project in its early phases of growth and the opportunity for creativity, professional development, and leadership of these promises.

The Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy advances research to understand structural inequalities and works to identify transformational ways to promote equity. As a premier cross-disciplinary hub, the Institute draws on faculty across The New School in New York City, which has long fostered innovative thinking about power, structure, design, politics, economics, and society. The Institute engages researchers and practitioners, including community and business leaders, policymakers, philanthropists, and journalists in order to increase economic inclusion, civic engagement, and social equity. More information about the Institute can be found at:

The position will be fixed term-limited, with an initial term of 2 years and a start date preferably before June 1st, 2024. This is a full-time position offering up to 35 hours of work per week and funding for the role is contingent upon continued grant funding.

The New School is strongly committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and particularly seeks applications from members of underrepresented groups, as well as candidates who share this commitment.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Operations and Administration

    • Alongside Institute team members, execute on HPEP's budget, other financial operations, scheduling, and communications functions in accordance with the Senior Director and Chairs' vision.
    • Engage in weekly and quarterly meetings with Institute staff, and become a part of the Institute's broader team advancing a moral economy.
    • Support grantmaking and subcontracting processes.
    • Lead and support the recruitment and on-boarding of additional team members or subcontractors as needed.
    Program Development and Implementation
    • Develop and implement HPEP field building and organizing initiatives while working alongside the Director, Co-Chairs, and partners.
    • Perform research and write memos or reports as needed to support HPEP's partnerships and programmatic work.
    • Collaborate with the Director and Co-Chairs to develop broad economic and health policies in alignment with HPEP's vision.
    • Manage and execute high-quality national and global convenings of key partners and stakeholders.
    • Participate in partner events on health and political economy and promote the profile of both HPEP and The Institute.
    • Synergize HPEP's initiatives with existing Institute programming.
    • Support program-focused grant-writing as needed alongside The Institute team in fulfillment of HPEP's goals.
    Communications
    • Represent HPEP and The Institute's public profile.
    • Support the development and implementation of HPEP communications, focusing on building momentum and showcasing work.
    • Develop ongoing content for the website as needed and maintain listserv to strengthen HPEP and The Institute's network of support.
    • Work with Director and Institute staff to support external communications with media and decision-makers.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • At least 5+ years of relevant work experience
    • Ability to prioritize, problem-solve, manage diverse activities, and meet deadlines autonomously
