Product, IP, and Compliance Counsel - San Francisco, CA, United States - Asana

    Default job background
    Description

Our legal team works cross-functionally to help achieve Asana's mission of enabling all teams to work together effortlessly. We're a global, collaborative team responsible for supporting all groups throughout the organization to ensure they have the resources they need to be successful and also support Asana's core values and interests. We run ideas past each other, we problem-solve together, we partner with other groups to navigate through challenging issues, and we're looking for a new member to join our team.

You'll be stepping into a role that covers intellectual property, compliance, product, marketing, and partnerships. We're looking for a mid-level attorney with experience in some of those areas and interest in learning others. This is a great opportunity to dive into a variety of issues and work closely with cross-functional teams across a mission-driven company. This role offers exposure to a range of issues such as intellectual property prosecution, strategy, and enforcement; product feature development and rollout; marketing and sales content review; trade compliance programs and strategy; engineering and open source - all with a vision towards enhancing Asana's mission and business. We are looking for a collaborative team player willing to dive in and bring a business-oriented, thoughtful, practical mindset to solving problems and scaling programs.

This role is based in our San Francisco office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. The standard in-office days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays. Working from home on Fridays depends on the type of work you do and the teams with which you partner. If you're interviewing for this role, your recruiter will share more about the in-office requirements.

    What you'll achieve

    • Assist our Lead IP counsels on all matters relating to intellectual property - from trademark and copyright filings, IP enforcement, managing patent harvesting to prosecution
    • Enhance Asana's trade and export compliance program, including staying abreast of trade related global issues, updating relevant policies, screening, and maturing our training program
    • Work with Asana's marketing organization to review and advise on sales and marketing materials and practices to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, third-party rights, and company policies
    • Work with Asana R&D teams on product and feature development and programs, including advising on general compliance issues and go-to-market plans
    • Partner with privacy, commercial, marketing, and corporate legal stakeholders to surface, communicate, and drive resolution around concerns relating to Asana products
    • Work to optimize and scale processes and enablement materials for the areas and teams we counsel

    About you

    • JD from an accredited and U.S-qualified law school (California bar membership or California registered in-house counsel preferred)
    • 4+ years combined experience working as in-house counsel at a SaaS company in product counseling, intellectual property, compliance, or marketing and/or at a law firm counseling SaaS companies on product and/or intellectual property. Enterprise level experience preferred.
    • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work cross-functionally with lawyers and non-lawyers across the company. Ability to breakdown legal concepts and explain them in plain language to non-lawyers with contextual clarity
    • Creative problem solver comfortable with assessing risks and making decisions
    • Experience in IP, marketing, payments, international compliance, or product counseling
    • Business and customer oriented with experience bringing diverse stakeholders to agreement
    • Familiarity with issue-spotting regulatory issues and supporting driving compliant solutions
    • Excellent legal and business judgment with the ability to assess and clearly communicate risks and tradeoffs to business partners

At Asana, we're committed to building teams that include a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills, as this is critical to helping us achieve our mission. If you're interested in this role and don't meet every listed requirement, we still encourage you to apply.

    What we'll offer

Our comprehensive compensation package plays a big part in how we recognize you for the impact you have on our path to achieving our mission. We believe that compensation should be reflective of the value you create relative to the market value of your role. To ensure pay is fair and not impacted by biases, we're committed to looking at market value which is why we check ourselves and conduct a yearly pay equity audit.

For this role, the estimated base salary range is between $202,000 - $256,000. The actual base salary will vary based on various factors, including market and individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process. The listed range above is a guideline, and the base salary range for this role may be modified.
