    Default job background
    Description

    I. JOB OVERVIEW

    Job Description Summary:

The George Washington University (GW) Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) is seeking a Director, Prospect Research as part of the Research and Relationship Management (RRM) team.

DAR is responsible for leading the university's alumni engagement and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients, and other friends. Our goal is to advance GWs mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care. The Director, Prospect Research is a passionate member of the RRM leadership cohort, helping create and enact a formal vision for prospect development at GW. A strategic partner and trusted advisor, incumbent espouses a dynamic partnership with staff across DAR. This position is the business owner and lead for DAR's proactive and reactive prospect research services for gift officers: setting the vision for these areas, guiding the program toward best-in-class services, and proactively identifying creative solutions to complex challenges, particularly through lenses of campaign readiness and CRM conversion. Leveraging a project management mindset, incumbent directs a program that provides the right information on the right constituent at the right time to maximize fundraising outcomes: from identification of actionable prospects to facilitation of prospect strategy discussions that lead to thoughtful solicitations. This position also leads the team in compiling and analyzing data/intelligence at both the micro and macro levels, recommending and implementing new/enhanced policies, procedures, and protocols, and completing special projects to advance GW's fundraising efforts. Incumbent partners with relationship management colleagues to support the full spectrum of prospect development needs for a slate of clients. This role communicates to a variety of audiences on key findings, trends, policies, and procedures related to clients as well as other research and relationship management industry and philanthropy trends. This role supervises, coaches, and develops a staff of prospect development professionals to meet and exceed quality prospect intelligence for clients, and develops and implements accurate and timely reporting for relevant prospect development activities by providing quality assurance, training on best practices and creative techniques, guiding research strategies, identifying and negotiating priorities, anticipating client needs, and aiding, coaching, and supporting staff in their daily work. Incumbent fosters enthusiasm among the RRM team and clients as well as advocates for RRM. Additional managerial responsibilities include making hiring decisions, providing coaching, training, and mentoring, managing performance, and determining future staffing needs. Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. We encourage you to apply even if your experience is not a 100% match with the position. We are looking for someone with relevant skills and experience, not a checklist that exactly matches the job description. We want to help you grow and in return, you help us grow into a stronger, more inclusive organization.

    Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Proficiency in Apra's Body of Knowledge Prospect Research and Leadership with a general understanding of Relationship Management and Data Science domains. Skill in developing project/strategic plans with clear vision, goals, strategies, and tactics. Proficiency in negotiating requests and prioritizing work. Ability to manage multiple, diverse, and competing priorities while meeting deadlines and taking responsibility for outcomes.
