    Job Summary

    Provides guidance to support staff in billing and/or collections activities. Directs subordinates to complete assignments using established guidelines, procedures, and policies. Recommends new and revised procedures as needed. The Commercial, Contract, and Managed Care (CCMC) Supervisor is responsible for the accounts receivable, billing and follow-up for all commercial, contract, and managed care payers. The CCMC unit adheres and complies with CMS, HMO and PPO payers regulations and guidelines pertaining to reimbursement. The units deal regularly with complex policy and procedural issues that involve contract compliance. The CCMC units' duties entail the following: ensure regulatory compliance, interpret and apply State and Federal laws, works closely with university entities and affiliated institutions to develop and assure the quality of the university's billing processes. It is also the unit's responsibility to communicate and coordinate with various UCSF departments, including other UCSF billing agents to ensure the quality of the university's billing processes.

    The CCMC Supervisor is responsible for the direct supervision of their team(s) and the monitoring of workflow related to the billing and follow-up for commercial, contract and managed care accounts receivable for MGBS clients. The Supervisor will also support the Manager(s) in coordinating and monitoring personnel issues, monthly quality reviews (KPI), productivity monitoring, training and special projects as it relates to professional accounts receivable. The Supervisor will demonstrate the ability to perform all aspects of billing and follow-up with superior quality. The Supervisor will resolve or escalate issues as needed to facilitate the ability of their teams to resolve all outstanding commercial accounts through constant communication with the payers, other MGBS units, UCSF clinical departments and billing agents. The Supervisor will conform to all UCSF, MGBS, government and HIPAA policies and procedures.

An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

    For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

    Department Description

    Medical Group Business Services (MGBS) is responsible for the professional fee billing and collections for approximately 30 divisions in the School of Medicine (SOM). MGBS collects approximately $755M annually and takes ownership of continuing to find ways for the Divisions to ensure charges are captured and there is an increase in payments year over year.

    Required Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or GED
    • One or more years of experience in a professional billing office environment.
    • Two or more years of Supervisory experience.
    • Ability to supervise, schedule, and coordinate daily activities of subordinate staff and effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
    • Solid knowledge of medical and insurance terminology, billing and/or collections internal procedures, and external regulations.
    • Solid skills in quality customer service. Interpersonal skills to manage conflict and collaborate effectively with all constituent groups, including patients, physician offices, third-party payors, attorneys, outside agencies, and clinical and administrative personnel across departments.
    • Solid leadership skills to coach and improve staff performance. Ability to provide thorough and accurate reviews of complex subordinate work and to oversee the coordination of ongoing tasks and projects over extended periods.
    • Skilled in written and verbal communications, with the ability to effectively motivate others, to convey complex information clearly and concisely, and to prepare and present a variety of reports and analyses.
    • Strong critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze and evaluate complex and difficult problems, determine appropriate levels of intervention, and develop and apply solutions. Proactive and assertive account resolution skills.
    • Medical terminology experience.
    • ICD, CPT4, HCPCS coding experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
    • Computer proficiency in all relevant software, hardware, and systems, including scheduling / calendaring programs to effectively set and communicate work schedules.
    • Working knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to evaluate and document human resources matters and performance.

    License/Certification

    Preferred: Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
