    Job Summary

    The Senior Decision Support Financial Analyst is responsible for performing critical application and analysis functions in support of UCSF Health's Financial Decision Support system, EPSi. The analyst plays a critical role in maintaining EPSi to ensure the production of high-quality, accurate, and timely patient-level financial and clinical data for our Finance, and Operational business partners. EPSi is the single source of critical financial data that allows Business Line Vice Presidents and Directors to prepare ROI analysis for capital and value improvement projects, develop case-based budgets, and provide program and service line profitability reporting.

    Responsibilities will include developing business cases, extracting cost data, billing data, patient demographic data, and other information from the Medical Center's cost accounting database, as well as from various other dashboards or other Business/Clinical Intelligence tools. A critical component of this position is the ability to establish effective working relationships with staff who have a deep understanding of UCSF IT applications and databases, in order to develop the necessary knowledge for analyzing complex data sets.

    Supports the Director – Shared Service in their overall strategy to achieve best practices in the management of EPSi, and its associated reporting tools. To accomplish this the Senior analyst must develop and maintain key relationships with other Financial and IT professionals.

    The UCSF Health Shared Services department serves as a center of expertise for a variety of Financial Planning and Budget (FP&B) and Decision Support Services (DSS) administrative business processes, reporting and selective analysis to increase transparency, efficiency, and standardization, to create capacity in Business Lines to increase their strategic value to the organization and support the business entities in critical financial deliverables.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field.
    • Ten (10) years or more of work experience in hospital or physician group finance, health insurance, health care consulting, or a related industry.
    • Expert understanding of decision support systems, with knowledge of business statistics, quantitative methods, relational databases, business development scorecards, data modeling, and performance and profitability analysis.
    • Expert knowledge of issues and aspects of clinical finance, planning, financial data management, budget development, and business development.
    • Strong proficiency in utilizing the tools to produce comprehensive, studies and actionable intelligence.
    • Highly advanced organizational and project management skills, and demonstrated ability to lead a team, prioritize tasks, and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.
    • Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead projects and teams and collaborate productively on highly complex projects with key personnel at all professional and technical levels.
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to interpret and convey highly sophisticated technical and financial information in a clear, concise manner, and to make cogent presentations of analyses, reports, and investigation results.
    • Advanced problem-solving skills analytical ability, and in-depth knowledge of documentation and reporting, with the ability to run highly complex queries and studies, collect and analyze financial and performance data, and produce relevant, meaningful reports, analyses, and forecasts.
    • Advanced data management and mining skills including the ability to develop and execute highly complex SQL queries and stored procedures to organize, transform, and extract financial and clinical data for the production of relevant, meaningful reports, statistics, analyses, and forecasts.
    • A strong understanding of cost accounting concepts, as well as financial modeling techniques such as discounted cash flow/net present value and internal return on investment is required.
    • Must be flexible, have a positive attitude and a sense of humor is highly desirable.
    • A professional approach to work including a strong sense of responsibility for assigned duties.
    • Demonstrated ability to handle and prioritize multiple assignments and overlapping deadlines.
    • The ability to work in our Brisbane office when needed.

    Preferred Qualifications

    EPSI cost accounting system or other hospital cost accounting system experience is highly desirable.
