    Job Summary

    In partnership with the Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC), the Chief Operating Officer & Executive Director develops divisional policies and authorizes their implementation. Provides advice, guidance, and assistance to the AVC and may also support members of management team. Represents the organization in location-wide and systemwide meetings and discussions. Recognized as an influential leader. Makes final decisions for the organization and ensures achievement of objectives. Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of division.

    Will be assigned highly sensitive projects involving areas of the division that need support or special skills to navigate the University to accomplish broad objectives. May be placed in charge of various departments in order to advance their development. Responsible for determining which areas of the division would benefit from shared services. Evaluates and determines staffing, implements reorganizations, and monitors progress. Oversees all administrative, financial, communications, and human resource areas of the division. Manages a total staff of 25+ through 3-4 subordinate chiefs, directors or associate/assistant directors. Serves as liaison to the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor, the FAS Finance Service Center, and IT resources housed in the ITS Department. Serves as an organizational, administrative, financial, and strategic partner to the AVC, and also to the CLS Executive Team (CLSET), consisting of two Assistant Vice Chancellors, two Executive Directors, and other management staff. Serves on the CLSET. Ensures the effective management of the AVC Immediate Office. Serves as a member and leader of the CLSET. Finds and achieves consensus among the CLSET.

    Department Description

    Campus Life Services consists of 11 departments that form a division of UCSF Finance and Administration (FAS). These diverse departments are Arts & Events, Childcare, Conference Services, Documents & Media, Facilities & Utilities, Fitness & Recreation, Housing, Marketing by CLS, Retail Services, Sustainability, and Transportation. With over 800 team members and budgets totaling over $200 million, Campus Life Services delivers best in class auxiliary and facilities services to run the UCSF enterprise. The scope and challenges of the division are complex and robust given the variety of services managed and the expectation that all 11 organizations are responsive to student, faculty, staff, and patient needs. A high degree of innovation and customer service and program excellence is always the overarching aim.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or related experience/training
    • 15 years of progressive leadership in a university or large organization setting
    • Lean, Six Sigma, or equivalent training
    • Advanced leadership training or equivalent training
    • Experience implementing reorganizations, budget growth and reduction, and creating staff equity
    • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll
    • Thorough knowledge of the legal constraints and opportunities for higher education in the State of California and through Federal programs and regulations
    • Thorough knowledge of the organizational environment of higher education and large research universities to understand client priorities, issues, motivations and constraints
    • Thorough knowledge of organizational processes, protocols and procedures
    • Excellent consulting, relationship building and strategic thinking skills
    • Excellent ability to establish mission and goals at the macro-level; to lead subordinate management to develop goals in alignment with mission
    • Sophisticated leadership abilities to establish department goals, and motivate and influence others to achieve
    • Demonstrated ability to engage organizational-, people- and project-management using approaches that demonstrate a high level of familiarity with DEIB best practices
    • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses and have the ability to seek alternative solutions, conclusions, and approaches to problems

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Advanced degree preferred
    • UCSF and/or Campus Life Services experience preferred
