    Job Description

    The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking an experienced individual to become our new Registered Nurse VI. The incumbent administers Nursing services in OR, ADS, PACU, GI and SDP according to hospital/departmental performance (PI) concepts and professional standards of practice. The RN VI integrates nursing department philosophy, mission, goals, policy/procedure, and governmental regulations into nursing care/practice by interfacing and collaborating with Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Nurse Managers and inter/cross-departmental and multidisciplinary personnel to provide twenty-four-hour (24HR) accountability for effective delivery of care for patients /clients from DPH/ DOC/DMH/ DMR/ Shelter(s) and community. The incumbent will also provide leadership for planning, directing, coordinating, and improving nursing care services that meet community and patient care needs and improve health outcomes. Help by collaborating with other service directors to allocate nursing resources that meet acuity levels of care/patient care needs and the professional development/competency of staff.

    Hours: Monday-Friday 7-3:30PM, Weekends Off

    Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

    • Administrates Nursing Service in OR, ADS, PACU, GI and SPD by interfacing and collaborating with CNO, Nurse Managers and inter/cross depart-mental and multidisciplinary personnel to provide 24° accountability for effective delivery of care for patients/clients from DPH/DOC/DMH/DMR/Shelter(s) and Community.
    • Administrates Nursing Services and organizes, directs, and staffs OR, ADS, PACU, GI and SPD in compliance with standards of professional practice, Nursing Department philosophy, mission, goals, policy/procedure, hospital/department Performance Improvement Program, and governmental regulations and assures integration into practice.
    • Promulgates and communicates organizational and departmental mission, vision, and strategic plan to provide staff with framework that guides day to day action and to encourage staff participation in improving organizational performance and patient care process.
    • Directs and coordinates special research project to maintain and upgrade quality of patient care, to keep up with new techniques and equipment in all departments especially OR, SPD.
    • Facilitates implementation of hospital/department Performance Improvement Program to promote an independent, creative, and analytical thinking and decision-making process and scientific development of nursing process with responsibility and accountability for outcomes of nursing interventions.
    • Oversees administration of OR, ADS, PACU, GI and SPD and clinical management/care of patients through reports, incident/accident reports, administrative meetings, conferences. Leads, participates in inter/cross departmental, cross functional and multi-disciplinary teams and meetings to assess, and evaluate needs of organization, departments, patients, and other users of services to improve care of patients and performance of services.
    • Interviews and selects candidates for employment as RN's, LPN's, AN's, Secretaries, Anesthesia Technician for OR, ADS, PACU, GI and CSR/Processing. Recommends to CNO new employees, promotions, and new positions according to departmental needs.
    • Collaborates with CNO on staffing patterns and cost-effective utilization of resources to meet acuity levels of patient care needs in OR, ADS, PACU, GI and CSR/ Processing. Oversees staff planning and scheduling for OR, ADS, PACU, GI and CSR/Processing to provide appropriate level of care.
    • Conducts periodic reviews of each department to systematically assess management of the environment and safety, surveillance, prevention and infection control, sterilization, decontamination and processing of surgical instruments, satisfaction of patient, visitors and staff, accuracy of documentation in patient's records and patient's response to interventions.
    • Interacts with personnel to promote harmonious relationships which further inter/cross depart-mental and multidisciplinary cooperation, effective Performance Improvement practice, therapeutic and ethical goals of care and practice by developing a culture that improves performance to meet needs.
    • Coaches/teaches and cooperates with Nurse Managers to develop and implement departmental PI programs that are in accordance with hospital/departmental PI Program. Participates and contributes to hospital PI Program to manage processes that measure, assess, and evaluate the performance and improvement of organizational management, clinical and support processes and integrate into nursing practice outcomes.
    • Conducts monthly departmental PI meetings to review findings and follow through of recommendations with Department Managers prior to completion on Quarterly PI reports and integrates information into Nursing Dept through Executive Nursing PI, Nursing Administration meetings and PI Committee.
    • Oversees staff development programs to assure currency of licenses, CPR, competencies, CEU's, mandatory review classes, ongoing review of principles significant to performance improvement, risk management, environmental safety, infection control, emergency management, other important aspects of care as per Nursing PI Plan and that clinical education needs of unit addresses and encourages participation in educational programs, preceptorship roles, Nursing Department and Hospital committees and professional organizations.
    • Oversees/directs the training of new employees in OR, ADS, PACU, GI and SPD.
    • Conducts and reviews implementation and completion of EPRS process according to policy and procedures.
    • Collaborates with Nurse Managers and CNO to direct/implement progressive discipline according to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts policies and procedures/ Collective Bargaining Agreements.
    • Directs and implements formulation of policies and procedures in OR, ADS, PACU, GI and SPD.
    • Collaborates with CNO and other Department Directors to plan, develop and implement hospital and/or community programs which serves the Commonwealth of Massachusetts public health needs.
    • Oversees selections, evaluations, and final purchasing of new equipment for OR, ADS, PACU, GI and SPD in collaboration with hospital management and procurement of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
    • Contributes to effective interpersonal and community relations to ensure quality of patient care, to promote a therapeutic milieu by functioning as advocate/resource person to staff/patients/ families/visitors/other departments and outside agencies regarding requested information and LSH Policies/Procedures by investigating complaints/clarifying LSH Policies/Procedures and always maintaining patient privacy/confidentiality.
    • Performs special assignments and/or completes special reports as directed by CNO to maintain Nursing Dept. administrative and clinical practice current with research findings and professional practices.
    • Performs related duties as required to maintain stability and autonomy of Nursing Department and performs processes and procedures specific to Department s/he directs- assumes duties of Nurse Managers in OR, ADS, PACU, and SPD in their absence, circulate and scrub on surgical cases, participate in direct patient care in PACU when necessary.
    • Performs competencies appropriate to the age of the patients served.
    Required Qualifications:
    • Knowledge and ability to apply skilled management and leadership skills.
    • Must be able to communicate effectively with staff and other disciplines and to write accurate reports.
    • Ability to motivate staff and to maintain a calm manner in stressful and/or emergency situations.
    • Knowledge and ability to initiate and direct quality assurance programs in accordance with JCAHO standards for accreditation.
    • Ability to direct interventions appropriate to special client groups such as mentally, physically and/or emotionally handicapped.
    • Knowledge and ability to direct cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
    • Ability to gather information through observation, application of interviewing techniques and examination of records and documents.
    • The ability to function independently.
    • Knowledge and ability to explain laws, rules and regulations, policies and procedures and guidelines governing agency operations.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of the methods used to evaluate nursing practice.
    • Understanding of the principles and practices of health care administration.
    • Comprehension of cultural diversity includes the ability to interact positively with individuals from various social, ethnic and religious backgrounds.

    Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

    Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

    The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic, or medical facility and (B) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

    Substitutions:

    1. A Graduate degree with a major in nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.

    No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.

    Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

    Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
