    Job Summary

    The Environmental Laboratory Section of the Minnesota Department of Health, Public Health Laboratory Division is seeking a Research Scientist 1 position for the Emerging Contaminants Unit. The Emerging Contaminants Unit is responsible for providing analytical testing for Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in environmental matrices. This testing will support environmental research and investigations of non-regulated chemical contaminants. The primary analytical platforms will be liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS).

    The principal responsibilities of this position include:
    • The analytical analysis of environmental samples for the presence of PFAS
    • Testing for chemicals of emerging concern in water
    • Follow established standard operating procedures as well as assist in developing and writing new procedures as needed

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    To facilitate proper years of service crediting, please ensure that your resume clearly describes your experience in the areas listed and indicates the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.
    • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biological sciences or related field.
    • One (1) year experience operating and maintaining mass spectral chromatographic laboratory equipment (gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy or liquid chromatography/mass spectroscopy)
    Previous experience below is required to be considered a candidate and will be assessed during the interview process:
    • Experience conducing laboratory analyses in an analytical or research program in environmental chemistry, organic chemistry, forensic science, or clinical chemistry.
    • The ability to work independently.
    • The ability to pay strong attention to detail.
    • Technical skills in the preparation of samples, standards, and reagents.
    • The ability to work collaboratively with others.
    • Experience following quality control procedures and protocol to ensure accuracy of tests using documented procedures.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience analyzing samples for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
    • Experience with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) instrumentation, workflows, and data interpretation.
    • Experience with multiple analytical software programs (Agilent Mass Hunter; Sciex OS, MultiQuant, Analyst).
    • Technical skills in the preparation of environmental samples using liquid-liquid or solid phase extraction.
    • Analytical experience with complex matrices such as surface and wastewater.
    • Experience working in a regulated laboratory environment (USEPA or ISO 17025 accredited).
    • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems.
    • Ability to collaborate in writing the results of research projects.
    • Ability to prepare and make effective oral and written presentations.
