    Job Summary

    Join our dynamic team at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), where your passion for public health can make a tangible impact on the well-being of all Minnesotans. MDH is currently seeking a Computational Toxicologist. This position provides expert knowledge and skills to incorporate New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), including large in vitro toxicological datasets, computational toxicological modeling into existing frameworks to develop health-based guidance. This work includes the research, evaluation, interpretation, and other activities in support of state-wide health-based guidance for toxic substances in water or other media so that the risk management decisions, policies, and practices of state agencies are scientifically sound and protective of public health.

    Primary responsibilities include:
    • Develop computational toxicology competencies within the Health Risk Assessment (HRA) Unit.
    • Increase the competency of unit staff in understanding and using computational toxicology and data science as it relates to NAMS .
    The location of this position is St. Paul, MN, however candidates residing in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, or South Dakota may have the option to telework; telework schedules are based on the Unit's operational needs and are at the supervisor's discretion.

    Qualifications

    Resumes must clearly reflect the below minimum qualifications to be considered:

    (4) Four years of analytical research and experience in a comprehensive program of study in one of the following areas:
    • Toxicology
    • Computational biology
    • Data science
    *A Bachelor's degree in toxicology, chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, pharmacology, data science, statistics, or other health sciences may substitute for one (1) year of experience.

    *A Master's degree in toxicology, chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, pharmacology, data science, statistics, or other health sciences may substitute for eighteen (18) months of experience.

    *A PhD in toxicology, chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, pharmacology, data science, statistics, or other health sciences may substitute for two (2) years of experience.

    Additional minimum qualifications assessed during the interview process:
    • Experience with all aspects of studies or projects to plan, collect data and perform field work.
    • Analytical research with the ab ility to organize and write complex technical reports.
    • Proficiency in quantitative analysis and statistical principles needed to develop health-based guidance.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • A Master's degree or PhD in toxicology, chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, pharmacology, data science, statistics, or other health sciences .
    • Considerable knowledge of and experience in scientific, experimental and research techniques relating to degrees and work in Toxicology and Human Health Risk Assessment.
    • Technical knowledge, skills and professional experience in toxicology and exposure assessment.
    • The ability to identify and learn how to use new computational methodologies, data sets, computer modeling, and toxicological risk assessment approaches.
    • Professional experience performing risk communication, planning and analysis work in the area of public health or environmental health programs or a related field.
