    Job Summary

    Join the mission-driven team at the Public Health Laboratory (PHL) and promote and protect the health of all Minnesotans.

    This Research Scientist 2 provides analytical support to the Chemical Threats and Biomonitoring (CTB) Unit. The CTB Unit is responsible for providing analytical testing of human biological and/or environmental matrices to support chemical emergency response efforts and for testing chemicals of emerging concern for the national chemical threats laboratory response network and various biomonitoring studies. The principal responsibility of this position is for the development of new methods and the application of existing methods to identify chemical contaminants or exposures in people and the environment. Novel methods and project results will be written and published in scientific journals and presented at scientific conferences. The primary chemical analysis platform will be LC-MS/MS, GC/MS, LC-HRMS.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    To facilitate proper years of service crediting, please ensure that your resume clearly describes your experience in the areas listed and indicates the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.
    • A Bachelor's degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, or a closely related field.
    • Two years of experience with one or more of the following analytical chemistry platforms: Liquid Chromatography, Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) and/or High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS).
    Previous experience below is required to be considered a candidate and will be assessed during the evaluation and interview process:
    • Experience with multiple analytical software programs (Agilent Mass Hunter; Sciex OS, MultiQuant, Analyst).
    A Master's degree may count towards eighteen months of experience. A PhD will count toward two years of experience.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Knowledge of toxicology, public health, and environmental health.
    • Analytical experience with clinical samples.
    • Experience with quality assurance programs such as EPA, CLIA and/or ISO
    • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems.
    • Communication skills sufficient to organize and synthesize material from diverse sources clearly and effectively.
    • Ability to prepare and make effective oral and written presentations.
    • Experience with writing and publishing the results of research projects in scientific journals.
    • Ability to work independently and manage time, workload, and priorities without day-to-day supervision of activities.
    • Demonstrated ability to provide training for other laboratory employees, students, or other trainees, to support a collaborative team environment.
