PhD Student Position (f/m/d): Granular Sound Characterization in Microgravity

Granular Matter Group | Institute for Theoretical Physics:

The Granular Matter Group in San Marino, CA is seeking a PhD student to join our team. Our group focuses on studying the microscopic mechanisms that determine the collective mechanical properties of large particulate systems. We are currently conducting an experiment on the International Space Station (ISS) to investigate the continuum limit of bead packing ensembles under fluctuating contact-forces and topologies using sound waves.

YOUR TASKS

  • Analyzing data from the ongoing ISS experiment
  • Conducting ground reference measurements and refining parameters for new runs of the ISS experiment
  • Collaborating with DLR Cologne to conduct laboratory experiments
  • Combining results from ISS and ground data with externally provided material calibration data to establish empirical laws
  • Theoretical analysis using Effective Medium Theory
  • Identifying and testing relevant mechanisms on different length scales, such as nonlinear forcelaws, forcechain topology, distribution of force fluctuations, and crystalline domains
  • Exploring extensions of current theories for disordered granular matter

YOUR PROFILE

  • Master's degree in Physics or equivalent
  • Previous experience working in physics labs with electronic equipment (microcontrollers, oscilloscopes, etc)
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++, and git
  • Familiarity with Linux is advantageous
  • Fluent
