    Overview

    Vital City seeks a Director of Research and Analytics. This individual will play a key role in promoting ideas and evidence to enhance civic life and contribute to our regular publications. We are looking for a candidate who is inquisitive, innovative, energetic, and collaborative, with a passion for exploring ways to improve urban environments. The ideal candidate will have expertise in crime and justice, data analysis for urban enhancement, and a discerning eye for assessing the quality of evidence. As Vital City prioritizes offering timely and relevant information to policymakers and the public, the candidate should thrive in a fast-paced setting and be adept at working with imperfect yet valuable data.

    Responsibilities

    The Director will focus on three main areas:

    • Identifying, analyzing, and communicating trends in public safety and specific policies through regular reports. Examples include changes in crime rates post-pandemic, the impact of the New York State bail law, and proposals for enhancing subway safety. Communication may involve white papers, fact sheets, and public discussions. Proficiency in creating data visualizations is highly valued.
    • Translating and sharing innovative ideas from research into actionable insights for policymakers. This involves summarizing key concepts and outlining implementation strategies, including costs and benefits.
    • Overseeing the development of a public dataset containing essential information on the criminal justice system and social wellbeing indicators. Collaboration with web developers and designers is necessary to ensure data accessibility.

    Skills & Qualifications

    Education:

    • Advanced degree (MS, MA, or PhD) in economics, sociology, criminology, data analytics, or a related field requiring strong quantitative skills.
    • Minimum of four years analyzing crime and justice trends in governmental, nonprofit, or research environments.

    Technical Expertise

    • Proficiency in quantitative research.
    • Experience with municipal or state-level data analysis, particularly in criminal justice.
    • Ability to communicate complex statistical information effectively.

    Professional Skills

    • Proven ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced setting, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively.
    • Excellent writing skills and project management experience.
    • Demonstrated ability in managing projects and staff to produce high-quality research materials.
