    Overview

    The Student Pathways Division of the Agency of Education (AOE) is seeking an enthusiastic and mission-driven individual to be the Mathematics Specialist. This position will provide statewide leadership, oversight, and support to Vermont supervisory unions and districts (SUs/SDs) and their schools to implement comprehensive, equitable, and inclusive mathematics and computer science education in Vermont consistent with Act 77 (Flexible Pathways Initiative), the Vermont Education Quality Standards, and Act 173 of 2018.A deep understanding of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics is essential. The ideal candidate must be willing to develop the skills necessary for successful project and grant management, have strategies for creating networks of educational stakeholders, exhibit high energy as a collaborative team member, and enjoy engaging directly with the field.

    The Specialist position sits on the Proficiency-Based Learning (PBL) Team. The PBL team works in partnership with other division and agency teams to support the implementation of content standards, proficiency-based education, local comprehensive assessment systems, and other education requirements and regulations to ensure that educational systems are equitable, culturally sustaining, and student-centered. This position will provide leadership and professional learning for comprehensive mathematics education and will also serve as a liaison and resource to state computer science partners. The Mathematics Specialist is responsible for supporting broad state-level efforts that include proficiency-based graduation requirements and the Vermont Comprehensive Assessment System.

    Specific job duties include:

    • Contribute content expertise in mathematics education to the work of the Student Pathways Division as well as other divisions at the agency
    • Promote evidence-based instruction aligned to standards
    • Provide statewide leadership and support to Supervisory Union/Supervisory District leadership and staff for equitable implementation of the Vermont Education Quality Standards
    • Assist in the implementation of Vermont's accountability system required by the Every Student Succeeds Act
    • Work with individuals and teams within the Agency of Education, other state agencies, SUs/SDs, and stakeholders (e.g., legislative councils) to identify areas where technical assistance and/or professional learning opportunities are needed and provide or arrange for support to meet identified needs
    • Provide professional learning to educators, education stakeholders, and leaders that will strengthen the delivery of mathematics education in the state
    • Inform or develop data collections and evaluations to determine the effectiveness of professional learning opportunities and technical assistance
    • Review and share research that will assist team members in providing leadership, support, and oversight to the field
    • Collaborate with state/national organizations in order to grow professionally and ensure that the most current information and resources are provided to the field.

    Telework is permitted based upon supervisor approval, however, work within the office at National Life in Montpelier will be required.

    Environmental Factors

    Work is generally performed in a standard office setting but significant travel may be anticipated for which private means of transportation must be available. Some work outside of normal work schedule may be required. There may be considerable interaction with a variety of publics and strong differences of opinion may be encountered.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in education, public administration, or related field AND four (4) years or more at a professional level in education, program development, or leadership role in a public or private educational institution.
    OR
    Three (3) years or more of experience as an Education Consultant III with the State of Vermont.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Master's degree.
