    The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health has an exciting opportunity for a seasoned professional to serve as an accountant for a busy and expanding research department.

    This position requires an individual who is a self-starter, resourceful, and can anticipate "next steps." The successful candidate will be able to accomplish this, in part, by having a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, being detail-oriented, and being able to plan, organize, prioritize, and execute complicated and continuing assignments without instruction and minimal supervision.

    The Post Award/Senior Post Award Accountant will provide administrative oversight and guidance to staff and faculty.

    This position has direct reporting to the Administrator of EPH Business Operations and dotted-line reporting to the Department Administrator. This position is eligible for partial telework.

    The candidate selected will be expected to function as part of the department's administrative team to provide the highest possible support to investigators.

    A regular on-campus presence is expected.

    Primary Duties:

    • Administer and maintain post-award accounts including grants and contracts, revolving accounts, cost center allocations, and other accounts; run regular reports for PIs.
    • Ensure that projects/budgets comply with all appropriate payroll, reimbursement, accounting and personnel policies and practices. Conduct a wide range of budget, financial and/or fiscal reviews and make recommendations. Assist with communications to internal and external sponsors.
    • Prepare and distribute accurate and timely month-end, quarterly and year-end close out reports and financial information which may include projections of budget vs. actual; prepare and submit financial reports and documentation to sponsors as required.
    • Track expenditures and maintain cost centers and other allocations; provide regular financial reports; obtain a Corporate Purchasing Card (CPC) and maintain required records; generate and/or approve PUR01/PUR02 and other requests for reimbursement/payment; verify accuracy of transactions and that those transactions comply with university, state, and federal requirements.
    • Bring conflict of interest, export control, and other special situations to finance, research and/or department administrator's attentions.
    • Attend and participate in manager's meetings; bring issues to the group for discussion/information sharing purposes; function as an active member of the department's administrative core, working collaboratively and efficiently with other administrative staff
    • Establish relationships with campus administrative offices; interact with internal and external customers of the university; handles sensitive and confidential information with tact and discretion; serve as liaison with key external agencies, campuses, or other high-level contacts
    • Work with senior administrative leadership to address and resolve issues; ensure administrative matters are managed in a timely and effective manner; advise PIs and research staff on best practices and procedures.
    Senior Post Award Accountant (in addition to the above):


    • Manage large-scale budgets that are individually funded but inter-related and managed as a single program of research. Manage five-year working budgets, updating projections as needed to reflect changes in scope of work.
    • Manage all aspects of post-award research administration for accounts; follow policies and procedures in the areas of payroll, procurement, accounts payable, and sponsored research; prepare and/or submit sponsored research modifications according to changes negotiated and approved.
    • Manage aspects of payroll including commitment accounting, effort reporting, etc.; process direct retros and payroll adjustments to ensure payroll reflects actual effort.

    Minimum Qualifications:


    Post Award Accountant:


    Education:
    Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business or related field that required coursework in general acceptable accounting practices (GAAP).

    Experience:
    Two (2) years of accounting or budget experience with at least one (1) year in research administration.

    Preferred Experience:
    Experience managing federal grants and contracts.

    Certification/Licensure:
    Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.

    Other:
    Related experience may be substituted for education. Financial disclosure reporting required by State of Maryland Ethics Committee.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    Outstanding organizational, problem solving, negotiation, and critical thinking skills are required to perform the essential functions of this position.

    Advanced knowledge of a variety of software programs (eg., Excel, Access, Kuali, Quantum Financials & Analytics, Taleo, and other standard desktop software); knowledge of best practices in research administration; strong interpersonal skills, the ability to function in a team and collaborative environment with staff, faculty, students, and an extended network of professionals.

    Senior

    Post Award Accountant:


    Education:
    Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business or related field that required coursework in general acceptable accounting practices (GAAP)

    Experience:
    Four (4) years of accounting, budget, contract, grant or research administration with at least two (2) years in post-award accounting or other relevant accounting specialization

    Preferred Experience:
    Experience managing federal grants and contracts.

    Certification/Licensure:
    Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.

    Other:
    Related experience may be substituted for education. Financial disclosure reporting required by State of Maryland Ethics Committee.

    Hiring Range:
    Post Award Accountant- $58,000-$68,000 (commensurate with education and experience).

    Post Award Sr Accountant-$70,000-$76,000 (commensurate with education and experience).
