    Associate Director for Programs, Planning, and Evaluation


    will oversee research administration related to the HDFCCC National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and its intramural programs, coordinate leadership committees, and support HDFCCC research hubs.


    Working with Center leadership and administration, the Associate Director for Programs, Planning, and Evaluation is responsible for a broad spectrum of complex analytical duties that lead to new recommendations and is expected to develop a conceptual framework for the implementation of unique projects and programs.


    The Associate Director for Programs, Planning, and Evaluation is often the first line of contact representing the Cancer Center to an extensive array of individuals including, but not limited to, NCI staff, donors, patients, vendors, and both UCSF and non-UCSF faculty and staff.


    As a subject matter expert on National Cancer Institute CCSG Guidelines, the incumbent is responsible for understanding, disseminating, and implementing federal policies within all CCSG-funded activities.


    The Associate Director for Programs, Planning, and Evaluation is responsible for the coordination of HDFCCC leadership groups, including Senior Leadership, and Program Leaders Retreats.


    The Associate Director will work with the Director of Research Strategy to create agendas, reports, and presentations for the meetings.

    The Associate Director will analyze information pertaining to the leadership committees, and recommend ideas, implement solutions, and evaluate progress. In addition, the Associate Director will coordinate with the Programs Manager on the logistics of the Program Leaders Retreats.

    The Associate Director for Programs and Planning will support research hubs and other programmatic activities of the HDFCCC.

    These include the creation of new Research Hubs, recommending and implementing events, and evaluating success of Hubs and all activities related to the CCSG.


    The Associate Director will also oversee the Intramural Awards Program to ensure consistency across the Center, regardless of funding source or target audience.

    ***NOTE: This is a Hybrid role.

    Department Description


    The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (HDFCCC) is a campus-wide multidisciplinary organized research unit whose goal is to enhance and integrate cancer related research and patient care at UCSF.

    The Cancer Center provides research resources to its 300+ members on the four main campus sites as well as other sites, and provides multidisciplinary cancer care to patients.

    The mechanism that confers National Cancer Institute designation as an officially recognized Cancer Center is a P30, Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG).

    The Office of Programs, Planning, and Evaluation is responsible for research development and administration of the CCSG, HDFCCC intramural awards, and other strategic grant applications.

    The Office of Programs, Planning, and Evaluation also provides research support for all HDFCCC members through various programmatic activities, including access to shared resources, management of CCSG-funded research programs and other programmatic and administrative components, and management of research-based strategic initiatives and emerging programs.

    Finally, the Office of Programs, Planning, and Evaluation bolsters transdisciplinary, translational research by overseeing leadership activities and internal strategic planning activities.

    Required Qualifications

    Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and / or equivalent experience / training required.
    5+ years Related experience.
    3+ years Lead/Supervisory/Manager Experience.
    Research development or research administration experience.
    Knowledge of human resources management practices and policies.
    Knowledge of financial principles and budget practices.
    Demonstrated knowledge university, state, and federal policies that influence higher education.
    Ability to build relationships, collaborate and problem solve both internally and with external organizations.
    Demonstrated knowledge of program development as well as grant proposal development and administration.
    Demonstrated leadership skills including effective communication, negotiation, coaching, and conflict resolution.
    Advanced oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Research Administration - Experience providing full scope of research administration for federal grants, including program project or center grants.
    Demonstrated experience supervising staff and students in an academic or research setting.
    Academic background and experience in relevant area of research.
    Knowledge of NCI CCSG Guidelines is essential to professionally perform the position. Additional experience in strong professional writing and editing skills allowing specialized execution of materials is essential.

    Background in both clinical and research environments creating ability to coordinate with diverse group of individuals from a base of knowledge, ability to advise/guide researchers (from laboratory, clinical and population science specialties) and strengthen teamwork, and knowledge of institutional policies and procedures are required.

    Prior experience in program, communications, or development role in an NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
    Experience in large scale, multi-investigator grant submission processes, understanding and responding to federal grant solicitations and guidance.
