Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Henry L. Stimson Center seeks an accounting professional to join the growing organization. The Accounting Manager will report to the Director of Finance and work closely with the Contracts and Grants team.

The Accounting Manager is responsible for maintaining and controlling general ledger accounts; recording financial transactions; providing thorough review of financial records and ensuring accuracy of allocations; and assisting with invoicing, reporting and funder compliance.

The ideal candidate is energetic, proactive, innovative, detail-oriented, organized, and juggles multiple priorities with ease and efficiency.

DUTIES:
General Accounting
Plays the lead role in the monthly and year-end closing of accounting records and coordinates deadlines for the closing of the accounting cycle required for financial statement completion, including analysis of accounts and preparation of adjustments as needed;

Prepares all journal entries to include adjusting, payroll, weekly, month-end, and year-end entries ensuring that the activity is processed in accordance with GAAP.

Reviews and records fixed assets transactions to include capitalization and depreciation ensuring accuracy and adherence to GAAP;
Prepares all cost allocation schedules on a monthly basis to include, but not limited to, time, indirect cost, admin, and overhead allocations;
Prepares the TRNA schedule on a monthly basis and adjustments as necessary;
Reconciles all balance sheet accounts and investigates any discrepancies, maintains monthly and year-end supporting schedules and account reconciliations;
Reviews and reconciles credit card transactions;
Prepares monthly financial statements, including analysis of performance against budget, and resolution of any unexpected results;
Assists in the preparation and coordination of the annual financial statement audit, supports preparation of the 990-tax return, and related activities;
Reviews, revises, and implements necessary accounting processes to ensure streamlining and accuracy of information and sufficiency of documentation;
Ensures adherence to established procedures, evaluates and recommends appropriate internal controls;
Reviews A/R and A/P transactions prepared by the Grants & Finance Accountant;
Acts as a backup for various accounting functions carried out by the Grants & Finance Accountant when needed; and
Supports the Director of Finance with projects as assigned.
Grants and Contracts Accounting

Ensures compliance with sponsoring agency regulations;
Proactively, interacts with program staff and outside entities, performs general accounting related functions for grants/contracts ensuring compliance with grantor and laws;
Reconciles various costs to prepare monthly and quarterly invoices, to include review and analysis of unbilled amount on a monthly basis;
Prepares internal and external financial reports of considerable complexity requiring independent judgment, initiative, and knowledge of the organization, accounting, and policies and procedures of the various federal, state and local government agencies;
Responsible for updating Salesforce and Adaptive with accounting related information as well as generating the grants review form for new grants; and
Assists in providing quality assurance for the grants and contracts functions of the finance team.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business is required. CPA is preferred;
A minimum of 5 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment;
Knowledge of GAAP, particularly as it applies to accounting requirements of nonprofit organizations;
Meticulous organizational skills, attention to detail, and love for processes and systems;
Customer service focus with strong interpersonal skills;
A willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and an ability to respond to requests promptly;
Strong verbal and written communication skills;
Demonstrated willingness to solicit and impart feedback to improve processes;
An innovative spirit, a way with people, a calm-under-pressure, and flexible approach when things move quickly;
Confidentiality and discretion,

professionalism, and commitment to excellence;
Experience with Federal grant invoicing and compliance is preferred; and
Intermediate Excel skills and familiarity with QuickBooks or similar accounting system preferred.
