    Bulk Assistant Manager

    Overview:
    Assist the Bulk Manager to lead and cultivate greatness throughout the Bulk department at Honest Weight. Train in all aspects of managing the department


    Status:
    Full Time, $22.00-$24.00/hour hours weekly, flexible schedule including early morning, late evening, and weekend shifts

    Bulk Department Manager


    Job Responsibilities:


    Customer Service


    • Assist customers with product questions in a prompt, friendly, courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary
    • Offer samples and suggestions for purchase and preparation
    • Help customers place Special Orders and communicate expected delivery schedule

    Personnel


    • Assist manager in selection and hiring of qualified applicants for Bulk staff
    • Help Bulk Manager design and implement Bulk Associate training program
    • Assist in training of staff and member workers
    • Serve as department leader in the absence of the Bulk Manager, ensuring smooth operations in Manager's absence
    • Offer feedback and redirection to staff privately in an appropriate and positive manner intended toimprove performance.
    • Assist the Bulk Manager with scheduling of staff and member workers
    • Work with the Bulk Manager to identify and resolve work performance problems and offer feedback, both negative and positive, to staff and member workers
    • Report personnel concerns to Bulk Manager as necessary
    • Assist Bulk Manager in conducting staff evaluations, offering input on performance as necessary
    • Set and maintain work priorities for staff and member workers

    Purchasing


    • Assume buying duties when necessary as directed by the Bulk Manager
    • Monitor and communicate with Bulk manager about availability of out-of-stock items
    • Negotiate with suppliers, brokers, and sales representatives for best prices, terms, quality and delivery.
    • Adhere to Co-op Food & Produce manual guidelines.
    • Work with Bulk Manager to update prices and signage, both on sales floor and in the POS

    Receiving

    Assist with receiving deliveries, including:
    checking product for quality, verifying piece counts and weights, helping with unloading as needed,


    • Sign for deliveries with appropriate adjustments to invoices.
    • Review invoices for cost changes and adjust pricing accordingly, notifying Bulk Manager of changes
    • Review invoices for accuracy, break into categories and code invoices, submit for payment in a timely manner
    • Return unacceptable items. Ensure credit from suppliers where applicable.

    Merchandising/Stocking


    • Coordinate replenishment and rotation of stock, ensuring that workers are following established stocking priorities
    • Keep bulk retail and prep area in a clean orderly condition.

    This includes, but is not limited to:
    wiping down bins and shelves, sweeping, mopping and vacuuming as needed, removing trash, cleaning surfaces and drip trays


    • Assist with morning set-up or evening closings
    • Dispose of damaged or spoiled products promptly and with care to composting. Notify Bulk Manager of waste.
    • Work with Bulk Manager and Merchandiser to design endcap displays, paying special attention to seasonality and upcoming holidays

    Department Maintenance
    Oversee maintenance and cleanliness of prep areas in accordance with Health Department standards.


    • Seek training on Health Department codes as needed.
    • Work with Bulk Manager to create a cleaning schedule and ensure that it is followed.
    • Note and advise Bulk Manager of any repairs, replacements, and/or additions needed to maintain equipment.

    Safety


    • Consistently practice (and model for others) safe and proper lifting procedures
    • Be mindful of potential hazards to customers and employees. Correct hazards as they occur
    • Use all equipment (including box cutters, ladders, and stepstools) in accordance with department safety procedures

    Additional:


    • Attend department and store meetings
    • Help complete inventories, including counting and calculation
    • Work with Bulk Manager to develop annual operating budget and project capital expenditure (equipment) requests
    • Assist Bulk Manager in establishing goals for labor and department
    • Perform other tasks assigned by supervisor

    Qualifications


    • Ability to safely lift 65 lbs. continuously and consistently
    • Ability to work shifts with constant standing throughout work day and frequent kneeling, squatting, bending, reaching

    Supervisory experience:
    hiring, training, evaluating and giving direction


    • Ability to project friendly, helpful presence to customers while maintaining a professional demeanor
    • Ability to schedule and prioritize tasks to effectively meet customer needs
    • Ability to give and follow written and oral directions
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Organized, with attention to details
    • Flexibility in scheduling, willingness to alter work schedule to meet changing needs of the department
    • Previous experience with bulk & familiarity with natural foods preferred
