    Position:
    The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is hiring a lead Wastewater Engineer for our Surface & Wastewater Division


    Salary Range:
    $39.00-$45.81 Responsibilities: Engineering Support Serve as the technical engineer to Permitting and Enforcement Bureaus by aiding with internal and external stakeholders on engineering-specific wastewater rules as requested. Provide engineering support in developing and interpretating permit requirements, compliance schedules, and enforcement-related documents. Develop wastewater engineering technical documents and guidance material (e.g., guidance, standard operating procedures, policy, and memorandum) in collaboration with regional engineering managers and technical/staff engineers. Engineering Reviews Evaluate and approve septic tank designs for residential and commercial developments, ensuring they meet state standards for capacity, safety, and environmental impact. Determine the appropriate classifications for wastewater treatment plants and collection systems based on size, capacity, technology, and other relevant factors. Regularly update and maintain the classification system. Review new-to
    • Idaho technologies and treatment processes as needed by the regional office Engineering Support Act as a technical resource for regional office engineering teams, providing guidance and solutions to complex engineering questions and challenges related to wastewater treatment and collection systems.
    Develop and maintain consistent policy approaches for handling engineering issues related to wastewater systems across the state. Ensure alignment with state guidelines and industry best practices. Provide support as needed in review of engineering plans and reports submitted to DEQ for compliance with the Wastewater Rules, permits, and other state regulations and engineering standards. Training, Development, and Collaboration Stay updated with the latest developments in wastewater engineering regulations, industry trends, and technological advancements. Implement necessary changes to ensure continued compliance with state and federal standards. Foster effective communication and collaboration with other departments, agencies, stakeholders, and industry professionals to streamline processes and promote innovative engineering practices. Provide training and professional development opportunities to regional engineering teams to enhance their knowledge and skills in wastewater engineering. Lead rulemaking, including initial justification and negotiations with stakeholders and DEQ's Board. Monitor, assist, and drive wastewater engineering and permitting consistency throughout the state by coordinating closely with regional engineering managers and technical/staff engineers, including the Drinking Water Protection & Finance Division, regarding application of wastewater engineering rules and permit compliance. Coordinate a biannual engineering conference.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    Licensure:

    Licensed in Idaho as a Professional Engineer (PE), or eligibility for comity licensure by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers in accordance with Idaho Code, Title 54, Chapter 12.

    Valid Driver's license


    Experience:
    coordinating with State and local government operations in one of the specific engineering specialties described below; evaluating engineering projects and making decisions relative to their merit; writing engineering reports and related correspondence; reviewing engineering analysis; making oral presentations to groups relative to the merits of engineering applications

    Describe your experience in evaluating or designing engineering projects related to water quality protection, wastewater treatment and conveyance systems, and making decisions relative to their merit; developing engineering reports/facility plans, point source discharge permits, or biosolids disposal facility plans.

    This is typically gained by experience as a licensed staff engineer or equivalent position in responsible charge of activities related to physical, biological, and chemical treatment of wastewater, and activities related to facility planning grants and State Revolving Fund Construction Loans.

    To meet this specialty, you must have at least four (4) years of post-licensure experience in this area.


    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to sit and work on a computer for 24 hours at a time.
    • Ability to reach and bend for filing purposes.
    • Some travel may be required.
    • Ability to climb ladders, staircases, work on uneven terrain.
    • Occasional travel required.
    • May work in vicinity of loud noise.
