Senior Editor, Random House Worlds - New York, United States - 2019

    Default job background
    Description

Random House is the proud home of the world's most acclaimed storytellers, thought leaders, and innovators. Our imprints include Ballantine, Bantam, Delacorte, Del Rey, The Dial Press, The Modern Library, Random House, One World, and Inklore.

We are currently seeking a Senior Editor to join the Random House Worlds imprint to edit 8-12 titles per year on the licensed fiction list. Random House Worlds currently publishes projects for high-profile brands such as Star Wars, Stranger Things, Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, Minecraft, and more. While this role will have the opportunity to work with our established brands, we hope candidates will also bring their own interests and expertise to the team, continuing to expand RHW's list beyond sci-fi/fantasy into other genre and pop-culture spheres. The position provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in a creative and hands-on department, dedicated to creating best-in-class licensed books. We are a highly collaborative team who love to bring our authentic style of nerdery to our favorite pop culture worlds.

    Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Brainstorming, refining, and pitching new project proposals to licensors
  • Researching and hiring knowledgeable authors to authentically execute manuscripts
  • Negotiating with agents and reviewing contract terms
  • Editorially shaping projects through both developmental editorial letters and detailed in-line edits. Works with authors on concepts, outlines, and revisions.
  • Submitting materials to relevant licensor approval systems
  • Keeping up-to-date on current pop culture trends and media with tie-in novel potential
  • Identifying strategic white spaces in the Random House Worlds list and developing projects that expand the diversity of titles we publish
  • Attending regular meetings with licensors to communicate developments, challenges, and solutions on relevant projects
  • Positioning works for target readerships, then working with the cover design team, publicity, and marketing to developing publishing plans that reach the widest possible audience
  • Working with production and managing editorial departments on copyediting, schedule, and design
  • Preparing sales materials as needed, including brand guides, flap copy, and title information sheets
  • Handling special projects, backlist titles, and legacy books as assigned
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are required. Candidates should have demonstrated success in a fast-paced work environment that necessitates managing complicated schedules and personal flexibility.

Random House Worlds is a collaborative publishing environment, and candidates should be comfortable working as part of a team and willing to go the extra mile for authors and licensing partners.

    Qualifications:

  • Candidates should have at least 5 years book editorial experience and a solid track record of collaborating with multiple stakeholders during the creative development process.
  • Genuine interest in licensed publishing and pop culture
  • Experience in IP and narrative proposal generation
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt proposals and content in response to the requirements of licensors
  • The ability to authentically immerse yourself in a franchise, even for brands with which you do not have prior personal experience
  • Strong organizational, scheduling, and time-management skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and communication skills
  • Strong ability to multitask and prioritize under pressure in a deadline driven environment
  • Experience with illustrated book formats a plus
  • The salary range for this position is $78,000-$85,000. Candidates with 5 – 6 years' experience acquiring and editing books will be eligible for a salary of $78,000 - $81,000 while candidates with 7-10 years of experience will be considered for a salary between $82,000 - $85,000.
