    Job Summary:

The Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) invites applications for a Teaching Professor Track, full time, 12-month renewable position. The successful candidate will join 2 other board-certified cardiologists who are responsible for teaching, research, and clinical service on the UW campus. The SVM is a collegial, collaborative environment that offers specialty care with board certified experts in allied services including large animal internal medicine, small animal internal medicine, neurology, dermatology, emergency and critical care, radiology, radiation and medical oncology, special species, ophthalmology, anesthesia and pain management, and dentistry.
The Cardiology Service has an annual caseload of ~1,250 patients and it is approximately 80% dogs and 20% cats. The Cardiology Service also provides service, on a consultation basis, for horses, farm animals, and exotics. The distribution of time in clinical practice/teaching, non-clinical teaching, and other service is expected to be approximately 60%, 30%, 10%, respectively. This implies approximately 24-28 weeks of clinic duty annually. The majority of the clinic caseload is outpatient, though cardiac emergencies are commonly referred directly to the Cardiology Service or transferred from other services.
A successful candidate for the Teaching Professor Track will commit time to the clinical activities of the hospital and school including clinical and didactic teaching of veterinary students, interns, residents, and continuing education programs. Teaching is the major responsibility of this position and individuals in the Teaching Professor Track at UW-Madison are involved in independent classroom, clinical and laboratory instruction as well as community and educational outreach efforts specific to their academic or clinical discipline. In addition, instructional design and development or enhancement of academic content using instructional technology, participating in curriculum development and other activities related to teaching, dissemination of teaching methods and practice of the clinical discipline of veterinary cardiology are expected.
The UW-Madison SVM is currently undergoing a significant curriculum revision and there is enormous potential and scope for faculty with enthusiasm and interest in clinical instruction to be involved in the integration of clinical competencies earlier and more proactively in the DVM curriculum.
The UW-Madison cardiology program has 4 residents and 2.5 nurses/assistants. We will have a brand-new small animal hospital that we will be moving into in March 2024. There will be 3 echo bays with GE and Philips echo machines. We have built a state-of-the-art interventional catheterization lab with a Philips Azurion 7 series imaging system, which will allow us to perform routine and complex interventional procedures. The interventional catheterization lab will also be equipped with electrophysiology study capabilities.
Extensive opportunities for collaborative research and teaching exist within the School of Veterinary Medicine and the UW-Madison campus. The School of Medicine & Public Health, the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, the School of Pharmacy, the Biotechnology Center, and the School of Education are located within a short distance of the School of Veterinary Medicine on the UW- Madison campus. A close relationship also exists with the Wisconsin State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory which is located within the same footprint on campus as the School of Veterinary Medicine. UW-Madison considers the School of Veterinary Medicine to be a major factor in its overall success as a top five university in terms of awarded federal funding. The school is also a major factor in Madison's emergence as a hub of commercial biotechnology, including regenerative medicine technologies.
The position is offered at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Teaching Professor rank, depending on qualifications and is available once a suitable candidate is identified with a projected start date of June 3, 2024 (this is flexible).
