    Executive Director, Literacy Council of Norristown

    The Literacy Council of Norristown's mission is to improve lives and strengthen families in greater Norristown and Montgomery County by providing adult literacy and English language programs.

    LCN offers free instruction to adults in English, reading, writing, speaking, math, digital skills, and GED exam preparation.

    Over 500 adult learners have benefited from over 15,000 hours of instruction in LCN programs in the past year.

    In 2022, LCN launched the Family & Community Literacy Initiative, which to date has distributed over 15,000 free books to local families.

    In 2023, LCN expanded its adult tutoring program to additional locations in Huntington Valley and Upper Moreland, and received the Keystone State Literacy Association's 2023 Celebrate Literacy Award.

    The organization's free programs are made possible through the generous support of foundations, businesses, individual donors, and over 100 volunteers.

    LCN provides practical tools to help adult students of all ages and backgrounds successfully pursue their educational and professional goals

    Executive Director:

    Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible to develop, administer, and monitor all program activities of the Literacy Council of Norristown, within the scope of the mission of the organization, and in compliance with Board policies and applicable laws and regulations.

    The Executive Director provides leadership and direction to LCN staff and volunteers; manages operations, implements policies, and participates in local and regional events that promote the organization and its mission.

    The Executive Director serves as the principal professional resource to the Board of Directors.
    Identifies and pursues new grant sources and prepares and submits grant proposals
    ●Manages the donor database and ensures donor contributions are recorded and acknowledged in a timely manner

    • Nurtures relationships with key stakeholders including individual donors, charitable foundations, and businesses
    Directs and monitors expenditures, exercising fiscal management of program and staff
    Collaborates with the Board of Directors in policy development and strategic thinking

    • Works closely with board officers and the Governance Committee to develop and maintain a high-performing Board
    • Promotion and

    Community Involvement:
    ●Acts as liaison with community agencies and organizations
    ●Plans and manages LCN community events
    ●Manages LCN's digital presence, including website, social media, and email campaigns

    • Recruits, hires, and manages staff
    • Consistently coaches and provides feedback to staff and volunteers
    • Facility Management:
    ●Acts as liaison with facility providers
    ●Ensures office is open during scheduled hours
    ●Attends and/or introduces Tutor Training Workshops (4-5/year)
    ●Oversees all record keeping and data submission activities related to education/instruction
    ●Oversees all English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) classes including: oversee proper student admission, evaluation, placement, and follow-up
    ●Works with Board to budget for professional development for self and staff
    Bachelor's degree, preferred Masters in Nonprofit Management, Social Work or Business Administration a plus, or MA TESOL
    ●Experience with ESOL or adult education
    ●Experience with online education resources
    ●A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in supervisory, financial, and administrative responsibility in nonprofit or governmental human service organizations

    • Experience in nonprofit operations, fundraising, communications, strategic planning, and personnel management
    • Flexible schedule (evenings and weekends required)
    ●Have (or are able and willing to develop) a network in the nonprofit and government environment of Norristown and Greater Montgomery County

    • Commitment to LCN's values as listed above, especially in providing a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment for students, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders
    • Proficiency in Spanish a plus
