About the Literacy Council of Norristown (LCN)
The Literacy Council of Norristown's mission is to improve lives and strengthen families in greater Norristown and Montgomery County by providing adult literacy and English language programs. LCN offers free instruction to adults in English, reading, writing, speaking, math, digital skills, and GED exam preparation.
Over 500 adult learners have benefited from over 15,000 hours of instruction in LCN programs in the past year. In 2022, LCN launched the Family & Community Literacy Initiative, which to date has distributed over 15,000 free books to local families. In 2023, LCN expanded its adult tutoring program to additional locations in Huntington Valley and Upper Moreland, and received the Keystone State Literacy Association's 2023 Celebrate Literacy Award. The organization's free programs are made possible through the generous support of foundations, businesses, individual donors, and over 100 volunteers. In 2024 LCN is celebrating its fortieth year of service to learners.

Executive Director: Literacy Council of Norristown
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible to develop, administer, and monitor all program activities of the Literacy Council of Norristown, within the scope of the mission of the organization, and in compliance with Board policies and applicable laws and regulations. The Executive Director provides leadership and direction to LCN staff and volunteers; manages operations, implements policies, and participates in local and regional events that promote the organization and its mission. The Executive Director serves as the principal professional resource to the Board of Directors.
Core Responsibilities:
● Identifies and pursues new grant sources and prepares and submits grant proposals
●Actively pursues workforce development funding opportunities
●Oversees fundraising from individual and corporate donors
●Manages the donor database and ensures donor contributions are recorded and acknowledged in a timely manner
● Nurtures relationships with key stakeholders including individual donors, charitable foundations, and businesses
Fiscal Management:
● Prepares an annual budget with the Board of Directors
● Directs and monitors expenditures, exercising fiscal management of program and staff
Board Relationship Management:
● Formulates and recommends visionary proposals to the Board of Directors
● Collaborates with the Board of Directors in policy development and strategic thinking
● Works closely with board officers and the Governance Committee to develop and maintain a high-performing Board
● Attends Board meetings, and Board committee meetings as needed
● Provides reports to the Board in a regular and timely fashion
Promotion and Community Involvement:
●Acts as liaison with community agencies and organizations
●Plans and manages LCN community events
●Promotes LCN and its activities
●Manages LCN's digital presence, including website, social media, and email campaigns
● Recruits, hires, and manages staff
● Ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations related to employment and volunteer service
● Actively develops team members' talents
● Consistently coaches and provides feedback to staff and volunteers
● Holds others accountable, inspires others, and acts as a change champion
Facility Management:
●Acts as liaison with facility providers
●Ensures office is open during scheduled hours
●Trains, directs, and supports volunteers tutors
●Attends and/or introduces Tutor Training Workshops (4-5/year)
●Oversees all record keeping and data submission activities related to education/instruction
●Oversees all English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) classes including: oversee proper student admission, evaluation, placement, and follow-up
●Substitute teaches in classes as necessary
Professional Development:
● Attends professional development workshops, meetings, and seminars
● Works with Board to budget for professional development for self and staff
Required Qualifications:
●Bachelor's degree, preferred Masters in Nonprofit Management, Social Work or Business Administration a plus, or MA TESOL
●Experience with ESOL or adult education
●Experience with online education resources
●A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in supervisory, financial, and administrative responsibility in nonprofit or governmental human service organizations
● Experience in nonprofit operations, fundraising, communications, strategic planning, and personnel management
● Ability to explore and pursue workforce development funding opportunities
● Skill in organizing, managing, and motivating people
● Comfort with being the public face and advocate of the organization
● The ability to study, evaluate and to make recommendations for improved program services
● Skill in preparing and presenting management and technical reports, budgets, and other presentations
● Acceptable results to background checks
Position Expectations
●Flexible schedule (evenings and weekends required)
●Have (or are able and willing to develop) a network in the nonprofit and government environment of Norristown and Greater Montgomery County
● Commitment to LCN's values as listed above, especially in providing a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment for students, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders
● Proficiency in Spanish a plus
Job Classification: Full-time, exempt.
Compensation: $65,000 to $75,000 annual salary, commensurate with experience. Generous paid time off.
