    Under supervision, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing the County's epidemiology program to identify disease patterns and overall health conditions in the community; conducting complex epidemiological studies; handling various managerial, supervisory, and administrative tasks related to the program; and any other duties as assigned.
    Examples of Knowledge and Abilities
    Knowledge of
    • principles and procedures of epidemiology like research design and evaluation, disease control methods;
    • program planning, development, and evaluation practices and techniques;
    • supervision and management principles and practices;
    • scientific paper preparation methods and formats;
    • statistics principles and practices in epidemiology;
    • computer applications for data management, analysis, and manipulation;
    • public health principles;
    • current trends in epidemiology and general medicine;
    • budget preparation and monitoring principles and procedures, including grants and federal funding;
    • impact of environmental, social, economic, and cultural factors on epidemiology.
    Ability to
    • plan, organize, supervise, and assess complex epidemiological programs and studies;
    • create scientific papers and deliver technical presentations;
    • evaluate environmental and communicable disease issues and propose control measures;
    • manage statistical databases;
    • perform complex statistical analyses;
    • prepare grants;
    • manage budgets;
    • establish productive relationships with various individuals and groups;
    • represent the County or department;
    • analyze and evaluate scientific papers and articles.
    Employment Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications

    Any mix of education, training, and experience that offers the necessary Knowledge and Abilities for this role as mentioned above. Possess a Master's degree in epidemiology, public health, or a related health science field related to epidemiology and biostatistics from an accredited institution;
    AND Three years of professional experience in designing, conducting, and assessing epidemiological studies involving communicable diseases and environmental epidemiology.

    NOTE: A doctoral degree in epidemiology or a related health field with a focus on epidemiology can substitute for one year of the required experience.

    Special Requirements

    License Requirements: Must have a valid Class C California Driver License, or be able to arrange for field travel, by the time of appointment.

    Note: Failure to obtain and/or maintain necessary license(s) may lead to disciplinary action per Civil Service Commission regulations.

    Working Conditions: Duties may expose you to potentially contagious pathogens during field work.

    Probation Period

    The probation period for this role is twelve (12) months.
