    Description

    MD Anderson's Cancer Biology department has a long history of being a leader in the field of basic and translational cancer biology research.

    The department emphasizes the training of students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows in the fundamentals of tumor biology to improve the outcomes of patients with malignancies.

    The department has built a program with close ties to many clinical departments to facilitate information exchange between the laboratory and the clinic.

    As such, faculty in the department are investigators on NIH funded collaborative cancer biology research grants.

    In addition, there are several physician-scientists who have joint appointments in Cancer Biology, facilitating the exchange of clinically-relevant information between the laboratory and the clinic.


    The primary purpose of the Grant Program Coordinator is to provide comprehensive grant management for a large basic science department.

    The Grant Program Coordinator assists the Administrative Director, Research Program, with pre- and post-award administration, effort reporting, and financial reporting.


    KEY FUNCTIONS

    • Provides administrative support for the grant process.
    • Develops and reviews grants for accuracy and compliance prior to submission to Office of Sponsored Programs.
    • Reads Funding Opportunity Announcements and advises PI of specific grant requirements.
    • Assists with proposal process including entering data into internal Click Grants system, as well as any agency systems.
    • Works with administrative assistants to ensure biosketches and "other support" documentation as well as grant related information in the Faculty Information system is current and accurate.
    • Assists with Just-In-Time processing including advising the PI of protocol requirements needed for compliance.
    • Aids in the preparation and review of the protocols.
    • Monitors current and pending proposal status for the department.
    • Meets with new faculty to determine their research needs for grant support.
    • Works with the institutional offices and the granting agencies to process the transfers of existing grants from other institutions.
    • Shares knowledge throughout the department on major sponsor requirements to increase probability of success in receiving awards from funding sources such as NIH, NSF, DOD, etc.
    • Communicates with internal grant processing departments as well as granting agencies regarding grant preparation/submission, including sub-contracts, core grants, etc.
    • Communicates with personnel in other departments and at other institutes regarding deadlines, budgets and other requirements for multi-investigator grants.
    • Reviews the awards for restrictions and special conditions and relays information to the award recipient.
    • Reviews and approves grant expenditures for allowability and appropriateness and ensures adherence with institution, state, local, and federal regulations.
    • Monitors and reconciles all grant activity.
    • May monitor and reconcile non-grant activity, future funding needs, as well as strategies to avoid over and under spending of grant monies.
    • Assists Grant Program Manager and Department Administrator with review of effort reports and works with faculty regarding any issues.
    • Maintains a high-level of professionalism and handles highly confidential information.
    • Assists with creating departmental policies and procedures in accordance with audit recommendations as well as sponsor and institutional requirements.
    • Assists Financial Analyst with preparation of departmental financial reports.
    • Performs other duties as required.
    Education


    Required:
    Bachelor's degree.


    Preferred:
    Master's degree.

    Experience

    Required:
    Three years of extensive administrative experience. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one year basis. With preferred degree, one year of experience required.
