    Job Responsibilities

    Major Responsibilities:
    • Research emerging accounting issues, appropriate accounting treatment, and reporting guidelines for transactions occurring within functional areas; prepare interpretation/position papers related to those specific accounting transactions and their effect on the University's financial statements; and update management regarding potential and/or required policy and procedural changes needed and budget and financial statement implications.
    • Provide oversight over the preparation of and review for accuracy prior to submission: financial projections and budget to actual analyses; management discussion and analysis documents; Schedule of Expenditure of Federal Awards; Uniform Guidance report; University's Facilities & Administrative (F&A) Cost Rate proposal; and other external reporting requirements including surveys. Lead the negotiation of the F&A rate with RIT's cognizant agency.
    • Work with the SPA Executive Director to maintain a strong internal control environment and provide oversight and direction of the administration of all post-award activities and non-student Accounts Receivable function; work closely with Sponsored Research Services to develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with sponsor regulations; and, ensure that departmental outreach efforts designed to support sponsored research activities are effective. Ensure all processes and procedures documentation are up to date.
    • Provide oversight to ensure successful completion of all grant and contract fiscal reviews and audits including those conducted by internal auditors, government sponsors and agency auditors; including the annual Uniform Guidance Audit of federal awards. Review audit responses prior to submission.
    • Work with the Academic Partnership Executive Director to maintain a strong internal control environment and provide oversight and direction to ensure timeliness and accuracy of financial analyses prepared by the partners, including year-end projections that will be presented to the partnership area leadership team and/or consolidated into comprehensive analysis for the University's senior leaders. Assist with the preparation of annual budget hearing presentations, ensuring that economic factors, internal policy changes, approved academic programs and reallocations of resources are accurately identified and reported. Collaborate extensively with departments University-wide (e.g. the Budget Office) to understand best practices; identify and/or develop effective processes and procedures to record accounting transactions and prepare financial-related analyses to support strategic planning initiatives.
    • Work with Executive Director of Shared Services Center supporting Auxiliary Services to maintain a strong internal control environment and provide oversight and direction of monitoring activities for cash, inventory, and fixed assets; act promptly to implement changes when excessive or repetitive over/shorts or shrinkage occurs. Review and approve monthly balance sheet account reconciliations including accounts receivable, inventory, etc., as well as capital reserves and active capital projects and work with the Auxiliary Service's staff to implement appropriate processes and procedures to correctly record accounting transactions. Provide input to the Dining Services Business Office (DSBO) and Housing Operations teams in developing and maintaining standardized internal controls and best practices for student account charges and other billing for services.
    • Provide oversight of the development of new sophisticated analysis, dashboards and metrics to enhance management-decision making using advanced technical tools. Develop performance metrics to encourage operational improvements, effectiveness, efficiency and appropriate levels of internal controls. Use metrics to benchmark against best-in-class organizations. Recommend and implement changes in processes and procedures to enhance efficiency and operational effectiveness.
    • Participate in, or lead, special projects as requested by management.
    • Participate in 40 hours of training/professional develop annually (or a pro rata amount based on standard working hours). Training will be applicable to the Assistant Controller's role within the Controller's Division with the intent of enhancing overall knowledge as well as the specific skills, whether functional or technical, required to perform successfully in the position.
    Supervisory Responsibility: Provides direct supervision to three (3) exempt staff: 1) Executive Director - Academic Partnerships (10 exempt staff); 2) Executive Director - SPA (14 exempt staff); 3) Executive Director - Auxiliary Services Shared Service Center (7 exempt staff)

    Reports to: The Assistant Controller for Accounting and Financial Management Services is a member of the Controller's Office management team reporting directly to the AVP/Controller & Assistant Treasurer. Extensive interaction occurs with Controller's, Budget Office, Sponsored Research Services, Provost's and Dean's Offices, Facilities and ITS staff and other departments across the University. Regular interactions with University Senior Leaders.

    Required Qualifications

    Education/Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree in accounting or business-related discipline with a minimum of 10 years strong accounting and financial reporting experience
    • Broad knowledge of all facets of business operations including general ledger, accounting, accounts receivable
    • Knowledge of applicable Federal regulatory requirements, including Uniform Guidance
    • Prior experience working with a fully-integrated enterprise wide financial system along with exceptional technical skills (e.g. PC and MS Office)
    Skills:
    • Must possess strong written and oral communication and diplomacy skills along with the ability to lead, direct and supervise a dynamic, highly qualified and experienced staff.
    • Exceptional organization, analytical, and customer service skills including the ability to excel in a fast-paced environment required.
    • Demonstrated ability to execute complex projects; a keen sense for collaboration, and a commitment to customer centricity.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • CPA and/or an MBA or MS in accounting or finance required with a background in higher education
    • Background in higher education with specific experience in sponsored programs post award administration

    Job Summary

    Temporary Position: The initial appointment period is a 20 month appointment ending on February 1, 2026 and is conditioned on satisfactory performance as determined by the Controller's office. This appointment may be extended based on satisfactory performance and the needs of the Enterprise Resource Planning project. At the conclusion of the project, the position will end and your employment with RIT will be terminated.

    General Summary: Provide day-to-day oversight, leadership, direction and long-term strategic planning for the Academic Partnerships, Sponsored Programs Accounting (SPA), including the Accounts Receivable (AR)/Collections (non-student) function, and Auxiliary Services Shared Service Center (SSC). Develop and maintain the infrastructure within all areas of responsibility and act as the lead to ensure accurate and timely accounting and financial reporting services to internal and external stakeholders while ensuring compliance with University's policies and procedures, Federal and State guidelines/regulations, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Provide exceptional support to internal and external customers by leveraging resources across teams with the goal of enhancing and building new process efficiencies and strengthening existing and identifying new meaningful collaboration strategies.
