    The Chronicle is seeking a

    Director of Marketing

    to join its team.

    This is a hybrid position requiring 2 days per week in our Washington DC office.

    The Director, Marketing is responsible for delivering growth of Chronicle readership, revenue, and product awareness within the higher education community through initiatives and experiences that showcase The Chronicle's journalism and product offerings.

    The Director will be responsible for marketing services including brand/corporate marketing campaign execution, paid media, ecommerce, digital and print campaigns, live/virtual event production and marketing, and database maintenance and integrity.

    Reporting to the Associate Publisher, Content Revenue & Marketing, the Director will evolve the marketing function to maximize engagement and revenue opportunities to enable business units and editorial to successfully exceed goals.

    The Director will have a proven track record in developing and executing comprehensive integrated marketing strategies, with a strong emphasis on leveraging data-driven insights and technology platforms to drive results.

    This role requires a strategic thinker with exceptional leadership skills and a passion for driving change and growth.

    What you'll do:

    Execute on the strategic direction set by the Associate Publisher and, together with other department leaders, manages corporate and brand marketing initiatives:Implement and oversee innovative marketing initiatives, including brand positioning, messaging, and print and digital collateral development.

    Drive the creation of compelling marketing materials for internal communications, human resource initiatives, virtual and in-person events, and general sales enablement tools.

    Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure consistent brand messaging and alignment across all marketing and sales channels and touchpoints.
    Monitor industry trends and competitive landscape to identify opportunities for brand differentiation and increased recognition.
    Analyze data and track marketing performance, making data-driven decisions to optimize marketing efforts.

    Manage campaigns against budget, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently to maximize growth and ROI.Oversee The Chronicle's virtual and in-person event planning, promotion, and production to ensure alignment and success across marketing and events teams:Leverage internal and external talent to develop programming for Chronicle events, oversee sponsor events, and manage execution of industry conferences.

    Execute a strategic event marketing plan to drive stronger brand awareness and presence, generate leads, and foster audience engagement.
    Bring together key internal partners with individual goals to drive progress toward a unified events strategy.
    Track and analyze event performance metrics to measure ROI and optimize future event strategies.
    Investigate a wide array of event formats to test in order to lay the groundwork for future growth.
    Manage the company's marketing database, including segmentation effectiveness, hygiene, and maintenance to ensure data accuracy and integrity.

    Direct targeted marketing campaigns based on customer segmentation and behavior analysis to drive customer acquisition, retention, cross-sell, and upsell opportunities.

    Influence marketing automation program creation and workflows to streamline campaign execution and enhance personalization.

    Reinforce a metrics-driven approach to evaluating marketing campaign/channel engagement and ROI.Allocate resources efficiently and effectively to maximize the impact of marketing initiatives.

    Utilize analytics and reporting to measure campaign effectiveness, optimize targeting strategies, and identify opportunities for improvement.

    Qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree in related field (marketing, public relations, communications, or general business) required with a minimum of 12 years of related work experience plus a minimum of 10 years of management experience a director-level marketing role.

    Strong preference for prior experience in media/publishing.
    Demonstrated experience driving and achieving revenue and business results.
    Significant experience managing multiple priorities, processes, and platforms while instilling a metrics-based approach to decision making.
    Strong leadership experience in setting, managing, and achieving priorities.
    Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor a diverse group of marketing and marketing operations professionals.
    Proven success managing data and marketing technology platforms.

    Authoritative marketing knowledge and ability to elevate the expertise, performance, skills, and reputation of the marketing staff internally and externally.

    Proven expertise in marketing KPIs, demand generation tactics, integrated campaigns, sales outreach and enablement concepts, and industry best practices.
    Superb analytical skills that unlock performance-driving insights across channel, creative, and attribution disciplines.
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to build relationships with key decision makers.

    Proven ability to lead a team and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and competing deadlines.

    Fluency in paid media and a strong track record in financial modeling campaigns to scale and optimize for LTV, ROI, or ROAS.Proficiency preferred with Marketo, Wrike, BlueConic, and Shopify (or with similar project management, CRM, CDP, or ecommerce platforms) as well as the ability to learn new software programs as required.
