Why do what you do?
Why do what you do?
For example, myself. I tend to write. Now to be honest I used to believe I wrote well. I had a readership of around 35 thousand and had been published a few times. Now I have a readership of close to 7, not 7 thousand, but 7. (This is not a request for consolation but simply a recognition of the facts.) So, why continue to do it?
I in the past wrote about things that influenced me or scripture. Now I am not sure how you would define the topics I choose to discuss. It is more like a dog circling the bed before lying down. But continue I do. Perhaps it is just the habit that will simply not go away or the pleasure of seeing words appear on the screen.
Many of us still do things that if we take an honest look at do not actually accomplish what we expect them to do. So why do we continue to do them? My words no longer inform the public of things I believe are important, but still, they are sent into the ether.
Please understand I am in no way saying or implying that we stop doing what we are doing. I am asking that we evaluate what we are doing so that we can find perhaps stop being frustrated by the expectations that we might have for the activity and enjoy the results we are actually receiving.
If you paint and actually are bad at it, that in and of itself is not a reason to quit if you enjoy the act of painting. So, what if you, or in fact, anyone else does not like the painting itself? But if your expectation is that someone at some time must like it, well then you might live in disappointment instead of simply enjoying the activity.
I am not talking about managing expectations, I am talking about why you participate in an activity. What result do you expect from that activity, not necessarily to what degree you expect it. If indeed I still wrote expecting that people would read my words and be influenced by them, then indeed managing my expectation would be essential. But if I write simply to help process my thoughts and express my opinion then all is well, as my results are in line with my goals.
Why we do things is actually much more important than the actual activity. Though failing to accomplish the activity generally negates the entire situation.
Well, enough rambling.
Blessings to any and all!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on why we do what we do. I agree that it's important to evaluate our reasons for participating in certain activities and adjust our expectations accordingly. It's also important to find joy and satisfaction in the process of the activity itself, regardless of the outcome or external recognition. It's great that you continue to write even if your readership has decreased because it brings you pleasure to see words appear on the screen and helps you process your thoughts. Keep writing for yourself and the joy it brings you. Blessings to you too!

@Ken Boddie writing in order to have retrievable notes is a fantastic idea! As for comments and likes, as you say they are nice but not the point. Okay, they do provide valuable feedback so, in that case they are more than just nice. The great unseen other other hand have seemed to be completely passing me by. But in truth that is acceptable. There is significant less stress in not needing to produce consistent home runs.

I wouldn’t be too harsh on yourself, Greg, by looking at so-called numbers of readers. It appears to be a sign of the times that those who acknowledge our written work with ‘likes’ and/or ‘comments‘ may be the tip of the reader iceberg. The great unseen, located beneath the ocean surface, appear to read and even enjoy what we post, but appear to lack the gusto, follow-through, initiative, or is it simply lack the wish for social bonding, to jump onboard and start a comment string. In addition to posting here on beBee, I often republish my work on LI and Facebook. In my interactions with my workmates, many have said how they enjoyed this or that post, which surprises me, as very few of them tick ‘like’ and none of them ever comment. I often wonder if this dulling of SM responses by the great masses is a generation thing, an SM induced attention deficit disorder thing, or merely an engineer/scientist thing. Either way, I personally often tend to write in order to learn via the process of research, and to enable me to have my concise thoughts on various topics documented in a retrievable location. These days, comments are often as rare as hen’s teeth, and a comments string, with interaction backwards and forwards, almost none existent. C’est la vie, n’est-ce pas? 🤔

A thought for you 7 is considered by many as a lucky number. The number 7 in Biblical terms a symbol of completeness.
Perhaps you have reached completeness as far at what you have said/written so far.
There is a saying go forth and multiply. In other words keep writing maybe new topics, and if lucky your following will keep multiply by 7s and soon you will back with many followers.
I find it hard to believe you only have 7 people are following you, they are in the woodwork somewhere.
