    Job Summary

    The Assistant Unit Director is a Registered Nurse (RN) position responsible for overseeing clinical and administrative operations for Centralized Telemetry and Vascular Access Support Team. This role combines technological proficiency and clinical skills. Promotes an environment for a shared voice in nursing practice and exchange of ideas to continually improve nursing and patient care outcomes. Accountable for the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of patient care. Consults and collaborates with other health care professionals to coordinate the management of patient care. Serves as a resource to staff, physicians, students and others.

    Supervises staff involved in remote cardiac telemetry monitoring and continuous pulse-oximetry in the Centralized Telemetry unit, which serves over 300 patients across three campuses: Parnassus, Mission Bay, and Mt. Zion. Supervises use of complex monitoring technologies, compiles and analyzes data for quality control and ensures safe patient monitoring within the Centralized Telemetry unit and Video Monitoring Team. Supervises staff involved in providing clinical patient care in the area of vascular access for adult inpatients at the Parnassus and Mount Zion campuses. Assists in ensuring the quality of patient care delivery and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. May assume partial responsibility for both units in delegated areas or in the absence of the Unit Director.

    Department Description

    The Centralized Telemetry Service offers remote telemetry monitoring for any adult inpatients at the Parnassus Campus, Mount Zion, and Mission Bay campus with the exception of those in the ICUs. Remote video monitoring for patient safety is also offered to the inpatient adult units at the Parnassus campus where patients can be monitored via a remote portable cameras. The Centralized Telemetry service provides remote monitoring 24/7 and staffed with telemetry monitor technicians, a video monitor technician in addition to a telemetry RN. At capacity, this service can monitor over 300 patients remotely between three campuses.

    The Vascular Access Team is staffed with highly qualified and skilled registered nurses. This team services all adult inpatients at the Parnassus and Mount Zion campus and performs bedside procedures including insertion of midline catheters, peripherally inserted central lines (PICC) as well as ultrasound guided peripheral intravenous catheters (USPIV). Over 2000 PICCs, 250 midlines and 2500 PIVs are inserted annually by this team. >50% of this highly engaged team are VA-BC certified and are authors and co-authors of many polices and procedures. This team brought forward many quality improvement initiatives and continues to improve and elevate vascular access care provided to our patients.

    Required Qualifications

    • Three-five years of experience with cardiac telemetry and continuous pulse oximetry monitoring
    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required
    • Completion of an EKG Interpretation course or equivalent experience
    • Registered Nurse in the State of California
    • Active American Heart Association CPR certification
    • Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise clinicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved in a centralized telemetry unit and vascular access support team.
    • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and experience with Philips, GE, Masimo physiological monitors; Connexall alarm management systems; and video monitoring systems.
    • In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations and internal policies.
    • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
    • Strong interpersonal skills for effective information exchange and problem solving with all levels of management and staff, consultants and outside agencies.
    • Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner. Prepares and presents a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.
    • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.
    • Ability to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.
    • Proficiency in independent EKG interpretation
    • Knowledge of medical center, HR and UC policies and processes.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's Degree preferred
    • ANCC certification in relevant area preferred
    • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in nursing units or departments
    • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources matters and employee performance. Provides input to decision-makers on human resources matters

    License/Certification

    • Registered Nurse in the State of California
    • Active American Heart Association CPR certification
