    This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) Union and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

    HOURS OF WORK: Hours Vary: Tuesday thru Saturday; Tuesday 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM; Wednesday/Thursday/ Saturday 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM; Friday 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM

    Example of Duties

    Using the library's online system, perform customer service tasks including the charging, discharging, and renewing of library materials, registering patrons for library cards, and placing requests for materials. Provide public assistance with library technologies, including computers, copiers, printers, and other devices. Cash management duties include accepting fines and fees and operating a cash register and credit card terminal. Assist with library programs and events. Provide staff support during meal periods and provide substitute staff coverage during staff absences. Perform all duties of Library Clerk. Assist librarians in conducting library programs and activities. Perform basic repair to library materials. Read and initiate work-related communication through e-mail, online chat etc. Provide excellent service to internal and external customers. Sort, shelve, and shelf-read all types of library materials. Put carts of materials in shelving order using basic library alphanumeric classification schemes. Shift and clean collection as necessary. Mend damaged items. Discard marked library materials. Provide customer service at the circulation desk and assist patrons with check-out and renewal of library materials; discharge returns; register patrons for library cards; place requests for patrons; renew patron accounts; accept and process fees and fines and operate cash register and credit card terminal. Answer the phone. Help patrons with questions about library materials, policies, technologies, and resources. Investigate problems with patron accounts, including fines and fees, missing items, and items claimed returned. Check-in returned library materials using library's online system, sort, and route appropriately. Process holds. Empty indoor and outdoor book drops. Assist with opening and closing procedures, including recording door count; cleaning up materials in the library; straightening shelves, furniture and computer spaces; stocking supplies around computers; powering copier on and off; restarting public computers; unlocking and locking doors. Assist with library programs and events. Read, respond, and initiate library and municipal communications. Attend meetings and training sessions. Other duties as assigned.
    Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

    High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent and six (6) months of customer service experience (volunteer or paid).

    Preferences:
    • Experience in customer service, cash handling and basic keyboarding skills.
    • Experience working with people of various cultures and backgrounds.
    Additional Important Information

    Preference will be given to Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) employees. AMEA employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the department for consideration prior to any non-AMEA applicants.

    If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

    If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS and (AS Accordingly, it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from the date requested. The processing fee of $48.25 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable), is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.

    All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

    Military Service Interview Preference:

    Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

    Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual's command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
