    Academic Coach - Anchorage, United States - University of Alaska System

    Description

    Academic coaches are responsible for providing personalized interactions to assist students in navigating the path to achieve their educational goals.

    Academic coaches help students "own their learning" by helping their peers with time management, using common software programs, study skills, stress management, test taking strategies, organizational skills, and other academic success skills.

    Academic coaches work with students in-person (drop in and by appointment) and online (by appointment only).

    The Learning Commons (LC) provides educational support and opportunities to all UAA students.

    The LC offers services to promote student success including:
    subject-specific tutoring, writing support, communication and presentation coaching, the Learning Assistant program, open study space, and more.

    To thrive in this role, candidates should be organized, patient, caring and understanding.

    Academic Coaches must be good at managing their time, staying on top of their coursework and other responsibilities, willing to learn and able to take the lead on projects like creating tips sheets, maintaining and organizing useful documents and handouts, or leading workshops on academic skills.

    Academic Coaches must be comfortable working with all types of students and must be available to work 10 hours per week throughout Fall and Spring semesters.

    Shifts are generally in-person at the UAA Consortium Library Monday through Friday between 10am to 8pm. An individual shift must be 2 hours long minimum. ACP Hours vary during summer semester and school breaks. Academic Coaches are not expected to work during finals week. Hours are subject to change.


    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    Working knowledge of effective academic skills and successful student habits.

    Ability to provide academic coaching in an organized manner.

    Effective communication skills and capacity to work with students with diverse backgrounds, learning preferences and needs.

    Must be able to work with peers in a cordial and tactful manner.

    Dependable and task oriented.

    Self-motivated, ability and willingness to take initiative.

    Desire to help other students learn and succeed.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    Required Education and Experience:
    Currently enrolled in at least 6 credits at UAA and in good academic standing

    Must have completed a minimum of 15 credits

    Minimum 2.5 Cumulative GPA


    Familiarity with or willingness to learn UAA systems and software platforms such as Blackboard, Google Suite, Microsoft Word, EAB Navigate, and more.


    Preferred Education and Experience:
    Customer service experience

    One (1) year of work/volunteer experience, particularly in a university setting


    Position Details:
    This position is located at the University of Alaska campus in Anchorage.

    This is a part-time, non-exempt student assistant 2 position, up to 20 hours a week with starting pay $17.00 per hour.

    This is a pooled position, which means that the position remains open over the entire academic year.
