    POSITION TITLE: Senior Director, Philanthropy

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    A dynamic major gift officer in the Office of Philanthropy at Scripps Research, the Senior Director of Philanthropy plays a critical role in advancing the institute's mission to improve human health globally through scientific discovery and innovation. This position actively cultivates and manages a portfolio of major gift prospects and partners with colleagues across departments to maximize philanthropic opportunities. Working closely with team and institute leadership, the Senior Director of Philanthropy also helps provide strategic direction for the Office of Philanthropy's Major Gifts program.

    RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
    • Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship process with an emphasis on $1MM+ gifts.
    • Create and execute a comprehensive annual development plan with goals and objectives that include thoughtful portfolio analysis, strategic individual prospect plans and clearly defined metrics for the purpose of closing major gifts.
    • Work closely with Associate Vice Presidents and fellow Directors in the Office of Philanthropy to ensure that development goals and objectives are met.
    • Partner with Philanthropy team members to continue building a robust major gifts program supporting current and future resource needs with a specific focus on high-net-worth individuals.
    • Travel for the purpose of developing prospect relationships and solicitation of prospects.
    • Demonstrate the utmost discipline in documenting the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and follow-up strategies for each prospect and donor.
    • Partner with the Donor Relations team to prepare and distribute stewardship reports to individual donors.
    • Demonstrate proactive resourcefulness in investigating prospective donors through personal contact, prospect research, volunteers, principal investigators and other donors.
    • Partner with Philanthropy team members in support of fundraising initiatives and strategies for major gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving and principal gifts.
    • Coordinate scientific presentations and on-site tours for prospective donors, community groups and others with whom Scripps Research needs to engage.
    • Work closely with the Philanthropy team members for special events and prospect research.
    • Represent the Office of Philanthropy at lectures, dinners, and other donor events.
    • Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.
    REQUIREMENTS:
    • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required.
    • 7+ years of experience demonstrating success in securing 5, 6 and 7 figure gifts or record of accomplishment that includes the identification, solicitation, and stewardship of multiple, high-capacity donors in the $1MM+ range, preferably in biomedical research, healthcare or higher education.
    • Demonstrated success in building a major gifts program as part of a comprehensive development department.
    • Campaign fundraising experience preferred.
    • Intelligence, maturity, and sound judgment, necessary for interacting with major donors and prospects, faculty, staff, and other constituents.
    • Project management skills and a demonstrated ability to set and complete priority projects under deadlines.
    • Initiative, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills.
    • High level of poise and professionalism, including follow-through and attention to detail.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
    • Donor management systems experience, e.g. Raisers Edge or Salesforce.
    • Some travel required, as are evenings and weekends for special events and donor visits.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    May include: Stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures.

    COMPENSATION:

    The expected hiring range for this position is $150,000 to $215,000/annually, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
