    SummaryPerforms technical duties to facilitate the operation and maintenance of automotive repair and servicing simulation laboratories and related classrooms. Assembles, sets up, and installs equipment used in laboratory demonstrations, experiments, or simulations. Provides technical and instructional assistance to students.
    Distinguishing Career FeaturesThe Instructional Associate for Automotive provides support classroom presentations and laboratories. The position requires the ability to setup classroom demonstrations, and perform maintenance on equipment.
    Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesSpecific duties may vary among departments, divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:
    1. Checks out and maintains control over tools, equipment, supplies, materials used by students.
    2. Works with students individually and in class-sized groups to enhance their learning. Provides direct assistance in the use of equipment and materials needed for instruction as well as orienting students to the laboratory or shop.
    3. Works with faculty/instructional administrator to design, construct, modify or rebuild equipment, modules, experiments that will be used in the classrooms/laboratories.
    4. Acquires and inventories equipment, materials, and supplies including, but not limited to automotive parts, tools, and documents required for student instructional needs.
    5. Provides technical assistance to students by troubleshooting and diagnosing problems with equipment.
    6. Regularly performs repairs and maintenance on automotive shop equipment on a routine schedule.
    7. Handles and disposes of harmful or hazardous materials according to protocols.
    8. Maintains records of automotive shop activity, including inputting data or otherwise retaining information regarding the condition, maintenance and distribution of equipment, materials, supplies, and written materials. (MSDS sheets, surplus, etc.)
    9. May guide the work of student helpers.
    10. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
    11. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy Code of Professional Ethics.
    Qualifications and Physical Demands


    Knowledge and Skills
    1. The position requires knowledge of the concepts associated with automotive technology.
    2. Requires working knowledge of techniques for diagnosing automotive operating problems.
    3. Requires working knowledge of laboratory or workshop procedures, organization, equipment, tests, experiments, and simulations.
    4. Requires knowledge of safe and proper handling of harmful chemicals, substances, and hazardous wastes.
    5. Requires knowledge of basic inventory methods.
    6. Requires sufficient mathematics skill to make calculations such as metric measures volumes, and ratios.
    7. Requires sufficient knowledge of computers to use common desktop and specialized applications used in supporting education.
    8. Requires sufficient knowledge of the English language to prepare routine correspondence and instructions.
    9. Requires knowledge of tutoring techniques including students' styles of learning.
    10. Requires sufficient human relation skills to guide students and student workers, and to convey technical concepts.
    Abilities
    1. Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position.
    2. Requires the ability to carry out the responsibilities of the position including set up assignments, experiments, simulations, tests, and student projects.
    3. Must be able to maintain equipment in a safe and organized manner, including the handling of hazardous or dangerous materials.
    4. Requires the ability to instruct students in the use of equipment.
    5. Requires the ability to perform routine record keeping and report writing duties.
    6. Must be able to organize and prioritize work and manage time effectively.
    7. Requires the ability to operate, calibrate, and perform minor repairs to diagnostic equipment and tools.
    8. Requires the ability to read and understand technical manuals.
    9. Must be able to guide the activities of work-study students.
    10. Requires the ability to work varying schedules including evenings.
    Physical Abilities
    1. The general physical demands, working conditions, and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources.

    Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, D.E.I.A
    The position may require an Associate's degree in automotive technology or closely related discipline and one year of experience in a teaching laboratory or automotive repair environment. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

    Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom and campus.

    Licenses and Certificates
    Requires a valid driver license.

    Working Conditions
    Work is performed indoors and outdoors where significant safety considerations exist from physical labor, handling of medium-to-heavy weight, awkward materials, and chemicals.

    Conditions of Employment


    This recruitment is for one permanent, full-time classified, 40 hour per week, 12-month per year position. The normal hours of work are Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.
