    Sr. Machine Learning Engineer, Search Science & AI, Evaluation & Explainability


    5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

    • 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
    • 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
    • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
    • Experience in machine learning, data mining, information retrieval, statistics or natural language processing

    The Amazon Search Relevance team owns ranking relevant results when customers search for products on Amazon.

    Our systems and algorithms operate on one of the world's largest product catalogs, surfacing the right products - with a high relevance bar and strict latency constraints.

    We are looking for Machine Learning Engineers who are excited to build the next-generation of Relevance Machine Learning systems and improve the search results for hundreds of millions of Amazon customers around the world.

    We are engineering a large shift in how we build, evaluate, and deploy ranking models. You will design, develop, and deploy distributed ML systems which are reliable, scalable and fast. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can invent simple solutions to complex problems at Amazon Search's large scale.

    You will be joining a highly talented team of Engineers and Applied Scientists working on solving interesting and complex problems in a fun and collaborative environment.

    This role will provide exposure to cutting-edge ML innovations in product search, information retrieval, deep learning and statistics.

    Engineers on this team get to:

    • Be a leader. Use your expertise to set a high bar for the team, mentor team members, set the tone for how to take on and deliver on large impossiblesounding projects.
    • Take ownership. Understand the needs of various search teams, break down requirements into coherent projects, design technical strategies and implement them with an eye on longterm impact.
    • Be ambitious. Find and eagerly tackle hard problems.
    • Be curious. You will work alongside and lead/influence other ML engineers, Applied Scientists. Your effectiveness and impact will depend on discussing problems with and learning from them. You will have access to the cuttingedge technologies and vast technical tools and resources of Amazon and will need to learn how to use them effectively.
    • Be customer focused. Work backwards from customer problems, figure out elegant solutions, and implement them for speed and scalability. Key job responsibilities
    • Design and build scalable infrastructure that enables training, evaluating and deploying machine learning models over billions of collected historical data points
    • Design and develop tools for monitoring the performance of machine learning models at scale
    • Design and develop lineage and artifact tracking infrastructure for training data, ML models and experiments
    • Design and develop reproducible ML Pipelines that help interpretability and trustworthiness of ML models.
    • Embrace and champion engineering best practices within your group and beyond
    • Produce clean, highquality code, tests, and written documentation We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations: Palo Alto, CA, USA

    The base pay for this position ranges from $134,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $261,500/year in our highest geographic market.

    Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
