    Default job background
    Description

    Job Description

Job DescriptionEvery day, we work together for what matters – bold, swift, and equitable climate action. ABOUT THE ROLE

3Degrees helps organizations around the world implement renewable energy, transportation decarbonization, and other climate solutions. To expand our portfolio of climate services, we are seeking an experienced professional to manage and grow 3Degrees' portfolio of Renewable Thermal Certificates (RTCs) and originate new partnerships with upstream producers of renewable natural gas (RNG) and biogas that generate clean fuel standard credits, carbon credits, RTCs or other environmental credits. The Biogas Originator will be supported by 3Degrees' project operations team, which oversees the ongoing monitoring, reporting, and verification to generate environmental credits, as well as the commercial marketing and sales teams, which manage the sale of the attributes to voluntary environmental markets.

This is a full time role reporting to the Director of Development within our Environmental Markets division. This position is open to candidates preferably based within a commutable distance of our San Francisco, CA, Portland, OR, Portland, ME, or New York, NY offices, where you'll enjoy a flexible hybrid working environment. While we have a preference for candidates excited for in-person collaboration working regularly in a 3Degrees office, exceptional candidates based outside of these cities and looking for a remote opportunity are encouraged to apply. Remote candidates agree to travel, periodically to 3Degree's offices for training or team collaboration and to conferences and customers as required. Frequency and cadence is team dependent, but on average is 1-6 times annually.

WHAT YOU'LL DOThe Biogas Originator will have two primary responsibilities:
    1) RTC portfolio management:

    • Oversee 3Degrees' portfolio of RTCs
    • Buy RTCs from RNG producers, and buy and sell RTCs in the secondary wholesale markets as needed
    • Develop new partnership agreements with RNG producers for 3Degrees to lead the generation and sale of RTCs
    • Support the 3Degrees commercial team in marketing and selling RTCs to downstream customers, serving as a subject matter expert on emerging RTC certification standards and greenhouse gas accounting guidance
    • Report to the finance and risk teams on the RTC portfolio

    2) New project origination:

    • Originate new long-term agreements with biogas projects for the supply of clean fuel standard credits, carbon credits and other environmental credits
    • Prospect for new project partners and field and qualify (or disqualify) related inbound opportunities
    • Structure and negotiate investment, pre-purchase, offtake, and revenue share agreements that meet counterparty and 3Degrees risk and financial requirements, managing external relationships and contract negotiations
    • Draft investment memos and financial models for consideration by 3Degrees' risk management committee
    • Structure and negotiate new contracts, collaborating with legal, finance, risk and other teams as needed

    ABOUT YOU

You are a motivated, mission-driven environmental professional with the following qualifications:
    • 5+ years working with environmental credit markets, finance and risk assessment, and/or project development
    • Extensive professional network in the biogas industry and ability to develop new strategic relationships
    • Strong knowledge of biogas/RNG/RTC/RIN trading with an interest in portfolio management and product commercialization
    • Experience negotiating unique offtake, pre-purchase and/or financing agreements
    • Strong financial modeling, risk analysis, and structuring skills
    • Experience performing due diligence and presenting opportunities for investment
    • Track record interpreting greenhouse gas accounting guidance and regulatory or protocol requirements to qualify and quantify environmental credits
    • Education in economics, finance, or environmental sciences
    • Demonstrated experience building relationships and negotiating agreements

    HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS

    Within 30 days,
    • Gain a comprehensive understanding of 3Degrees' existing Renewable Thermal Certificate (RTC) portfolio and origination process. This includes familiarizing yourself with available tools and resources for project management and credit generation
    • Establish strong connections with key internal stakeholders across project operations, commercial marketing & sales, finance, and risk management teams. These relationships will be vital for successful collaboration and project execution
    • Begin independently contributing to new project development activities, demonstrating a proactive approach to your role

    Within 90 days,
    • Exhibit the ability to independently manage initial discussions with potential biogas project partners. This includes confidently handling inquiries and effectively communicating 3Degrees' value proposition
    • Become a go-to resource for the Sales team, providing expert insights on RNG and RTCs to support customer engagements
    • Proactively source and qualify at least three promising biogas/RNG offtake opportunities with strong potential for partnership

    Within 6 months,
    • Successfully advanced identified opportunities by submitting term sheets or formal proposals to at least three biogas/RNG producers
    • Actively participate in closing RTC sales opportunities, leveraging your knowledge and expertise to support the Sales team
    • Establish yourself as a leading authority on biogas/RNG within 3Degrees, and potentially within the North American market, through active participation and knowledge sharing
    Within 1 year,

    • Significantly expand 3Degrees' RTC portfolio by more than doubling its current size. This demonstrates your success in sourcing, negotiating, and finalizing new partnerships
    • Contribute to shaping and developing a robust 3-year plan for continued business growth in the biogas/RNG market. This plan should outline key strategies and goals to ensure long-term success
