    Job Summary

    Involves all aspects of the medication use process, including procurement, prescribing, compounding, dispensing, storage of medications, administration and monitoring.

    Partners with physicians and other clinicians to provide treatments and advice to patients, records patient history relating to medication use and ensures the safe and secure storage of medications and related supplies.

    Advises physicians in determining the best possible treatments for specific diseases, stays current on pharmacy regulations, treatments and developments in research and design.

    Pharmacists are the experts on drug therapy and the primary health professionals who optimize use of medication for the benefit of the patients.

    Meets educational needs of patients, healthcare team, students and residents. Ensures adherence to regulatory and fiscal requirements.

    Spends the majority of time (50% or more) achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated
    achievements of subordinate staff. Establishes departmental goals and objectives, functions with autonomy.
    Manages the accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and often physical resources in
    compliance with departmental and organizational goals and objectives. Ensures subordinate supervisors
    and professionals adhere to defined internal controls. Manages systems and procedures to protect
    departmental assets.

    Under general direction of the Director of Pharmacy Procurement, the Pharmacy Purchasing Manager will
    directly oversee purchasing operations of an organizationally distinct and complex pharmacy service, on
    behalf of UCSF Health Department of Pharmaceutical Services. This includes personnel development,
    evaluation, and discipline, operationalizing the optimization of the pharmaceutical supply chain, managing
    drug shortage and recall procedures, coordinating the unit's activities with other units internal and external
    to the department, and managing the unit's operations to address the needs of the organization as a whole,
    including acute care beds, family practice organization, outpatient clinics, and affiliates. Specific
    operational duties include management of all purchasing, pricing agreements, inventory, storage and
    distribution activities for the department. Works in conjunction with the 340B team to ensure 340B program
    compliance, optimization and manufacturer patient assistance programs. Additional duties and essential
    job functions are broad in scope and duties require broad experience and knowledge of the healthcare
    system, pharmacy services, and the pharmaceutical supply chain.

    Please note:

    The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point.

    An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

    For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

    Department Description


    The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at UCSF has long been nationally recognized as one of the founding fathers for clinical pharmacy services, which was established in 1965.

    Today, the department continues to lead the profession through the integration of advanced technology & robotics, comprehensive pharmaceutical care and clinical services.

    Required Qualifications

    Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
    Must have at least three (3) years of experience in the purchasing department of a hospital
    pharmacy.
    Demonstrates subject matter knowledge of pharmaceutical purchasing operations, 340B drug
    pricing program, group purchasing organization (GPO) and other pricing agreements, and
    industry best practices. Stays updated on pharmacy regulations and developments in
    purchasing/contracting.
    Knowledge of relevant Pharmacy Department, medical center, and UC policies and protocols
    including procurement, medication storage, safety, and patient privacy and treatment.
    Knowledge of all pharmacy Federal and State laws and regulations (TJC, State Board of
    Pharmacy and CDPH).
    Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging
    environment.
    Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, patients,
    multidisciplinary team members, senior management, and assigned staff.
    Ability to listen actively to clinical staff and patients, understanding varying viewpoints and
    receiving feedback. Verbal and written communication skills to tactfully articulate reasoning
    behind own opinions and change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from others.
    Demonstrated managerial skills, training and guiding employees on skills to manage the
    procurement and maintenance of drugs and supplies. Motivates and inspires staff to improve
    quality and services.
    Ability to organize assigned staff and unit operations in an efficient and effective manner. Ability
    to apply policy knowledge to identify productivity inefficiencies and compliance risks.
    Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies.
    Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.

    Preferred Qualifications


    Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in clinical documentation applications and pharmacy database technology and train others to effectively use applications.

    License/Certification

    Registered Pharmacist in the State of California
