    Position Highlights

    The Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW) was founded in 1979 as a regional research and resource institute. SIROW's region includes Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Wyoming, and northwestern Mexico. SIROW's mission is to develop, conduct, and disseminate collaborative outreach, education, intervention, and research projects of importance to diverse groups. Faculty, staff and students work locally, nationally and internationally with numerous University of Arizona colleges and departments, other institutions of higher education, K-12 schools, Native American tribes, governmental agencies and community-based organizations. SIROW's projects focus on health and wellness, legal issues, education, employment, women's history, and the arts.

    The primary purpose of this position is to provide evaluation activities to LGBTQ+ identified homeless and unstably housed individuals through street outreach and advocacy. This UA-SIROW Research Specialist position will support a Terros Health project in Phoenix, Arizona funded by SAMHSA-CSAT as a collaborating partner providing evaluation activities (i.e., collecting baseline, discharge, and 6-month follow-up participant surveys at various locations throughout the community). The Turn the Tide Project II (T3-II) provides care navigation, HIV/STI testing, and other supports to LGBTQ+ individuals experiencing homelessness or other unsafe living situations. The primary location of this position will be in Phoenix, Arizona. The selected applicant will attend meetings, trainings or work-related events in Tucson, AZ approximately quarterly. This position is .50 FTE. It requires regular weekday afternoon and evening hours, as well as occasional weekends, so that services can be provided at times and locations most convenient to clients. Some flexibility in scheduling is available to meet employee needs, as long as client and program needs are still being adequately addressed.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    All agency positions are expectedto meet the University standards for attendance and punctuality, positiveinteractions with others, effective work habits, knowledge and skills, judgmentand ethics. The specific expectations and essential duties of thisposition include:
    • Effectively conducting outreach to homeless and unstably housed LGBTQ+ adults and engaging these individuals into evaluation services.
    • Conducting outreach outdoors on foot downtown, in desert areas, on the streets, in shelters and other areas that LGBTQ+ individuals experiencing homelessness congregate throughout the year.
    • Developing trust and rapport with LGBTQ+ homeless adults.
    • Effectively collaborating with the local homeless services providers, Terros teams and homeless services continuum of care.
    • Keep accurate and timely case records, enter and retrieve client information on a database, use agency email, and locate information on internet and social media sites.
    • Screen homeless and unstably housed LGBTQ+ adults for project eligibility.
    • Collect baseline, discharge, and 6-month follow-up participant surveys at various locations throughout the community.
    • Maintain locator files and tracking database for follow-up activities.
    • Clean, organize and enter quantitative data into University and government data management systems.
    • Conduct simple data analysis.
    • Create charts, tables, and graphs for presentation of the data.
    • Assist with writing reports writing and narrative summaries with regard to the data output.
    • Assist with developing and presenting power point presentations.
    • Being available during hours that are convenient to clients or required by program is necessary.
    • Participate in local and national meetings and trainings, as assigned.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
    • Strong verbal communication skills.
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Familiarity working with individuals who are homeless/unstably housed, have substance misuse or other health disparities (e.g., HIV/AIDS).
    • Ability to work with diverse populations; specifically, the LGBTQ+ population.
    • Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries in working with others and in handling confidential information.
    • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team setting and collaborate with partners.
    • Ability to feel comfortable and safe providing outreach services outdoors to transient population in various locations, including shelters and clients' homes.
    • Excellent computer skills, including communicating via social media.
    • Since the position requires frequent driving to various job sites to provide services and occasionally transport clients, a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy is preferred.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • BS or BA degree in a field appropriate to the area of the position and 1 years related experience; OR,
    • Five years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment, OR,
    • Any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education approved by Human Resources.
    • Experience in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point, etc.).
    • Experience utilizing and communicating in social media applications (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, etc.).
    • Experience screening and/or collecting data from individuals seeking services or engaged in research.
    • Experience managing data, including data cleaning and quality check procedures, and descriptive analyses (percentages, means, etc.).
    • Regular weekday afternoon and evening hours, aswell as occasional weekends required, as needed, to meet employee andprogram needs
    • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
