    Essential Duties


    • Inventory object collections, human skeletal remains, and documentation for editing or amend the Museum's collections database following established guidelines and museum standards. 2. Initiate, manage, and complete NAGPRA inventories and summaries in consultation with Native American Tribes. 3.
    Coordinate all aspects of NAGPRA compliance including, but not limited to:

    NAGPRA claims to process; initiating and coordinating consultation with Native American Tribes; organizing and facilitating physical repatriations; drafting, submitting, and distributing NAGPRA Federal Register notices (as well as addenda to past Notices); drafting proposals for and implementing NAGPRA grants; attending National NAGPRA Review Committee meetings; and documenting/archiving the Museum's NAGPRA compliance activities.

    4. Research the history of ownership and the origin of anthropological and other relevant collections. 5. Document bibliographic, stratigraphic, archaeological, geographical, or taxonomic collections histories using the Museum database and other sources of information. 6. Photograph collections and upload images to the Museum's collections database. 7.

    Utilize curatorial practices that ensure special care, security, and cultural sensitivity in handling items and in consultation with Native American Tribes and the Peabody's Native American Collections Manager.

    Collaborate with Peabody collections managers, including but not limited to the Senior Collections Manager of Anthropology, Native American Collections Manager, and Pacific Ethnology Collections Manager, regarding culturally appropriate storage, access, and interpretation of collections.

    9. Communicate with other museums, government agencies, and Native American Tribes. 10. Participate in national and regional networks of institutions holding Native American collections. 11. Monitor the activities of volunteers and students.

    Required Education and Experience


    Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Native American Studies, Museum Studies, or a related field and three years of related experience working with anthropological artifacts or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Position Focus:
    The Yale Peabody Museum is committed to repatriation and developing positive and long-lasting relationships with its Tribal partners. Reporting to the Repatriation Registrar, the Repatriation Coordinator will support this commitment by advancing the Museum's repatriation efforts.

    Daily duties include organizing and facilitating physical repatriations, including repatriation related to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), conducting provenance research using culturally responsible methods of collection care, and other duties as needed.

    Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
    3 years' exp in museum collections mgmt. Master's/Doctoral Degree in Anthro., Archaeology, Native Am. Studies, or history of Native Am. people. Exp implementing NAGPRA or equivalent repatriation legislation; engaging with Native Am. Tribes and/or other Indigenous communities; computerized databases, pref. Emu; Excel/Photoshop/Acrobat/other software; digital photography, photo or document scanning
