    Description

    Position Description
The Interim Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) in line with the strategic direction set forth by the NCFR Board. Visit for information on the organization.

    Program
NCFR represents Family Science scholars and professionals by establishing professional standards and by advocating for the advancement of the scientific discipline and the professions of Family Science. The organization publishes three international scholarly journals (Journal of Marriage and Family; Family Relations; and Journal of Family Theory & Review) and hosts an international annual conference of peer-reviewed, cutting-edge research, methods and practices, and pedagogy related to understanding and strengthening families. NCFR administers the nationally recognized Certified Family Life Education (CFLE) credential, which validates the experience and knowledge of CFLEs as Family Life Education professionals. It fosters dialogue through state, regional, and student affiliates (local chapters); sections representing broad topic interests; and focus groups centered on narrower topic interests. Members engage virtually via online discussion groups and webinars, and share their expertise through contributions to NCFR Report magazine and the CFLE Network newsletter.

    Staff
NCFR's team consists of 13 full-time employees. The administrative main office is located in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. Some staff work remotely and others work hybrid (in-office and remote). The Interim ED may also work remotely.

    Board of Directors
The Board consists of 9 voting members. The Board communicates with the Executive Director through the President of the Board and via monthly Board meetings.

NCFR's fiscal year is January 1 through December 31. Its annual budget is $2+ million. In 2023 and in previous years, NCFR achieved a Clean Audit, and the organization is financially sound. NCFR is funded by membership dues, revenue from scholarly journals, Certified Family Life Educator fees, and educational program registration fees. It also accepts donations from members and from the public.

    NCFR POLICY ON DIVERSITY
NCFR values the diversity of its staff and membership, which is shaped by our historical, cultural, economic, and social contexts. This diversity strengthens our organization and our members' research, scholarship, and practice. NCFR's definition of diversity applies to all aspects of our operations and our membership. Embracing diversity means acknowledging that all groups do not live in the world in the same way. Diversity provides a lens for understanding (a) disparities of power, privilege, and access as well as the (b) exclusion of marginalized groups. The lens can also reveal that some groups are diminished by invisibility or a lack of recognition. In addition, diversity focuses attention on the strengths, wisdom and competencies of different individuals, couples, families, groups, and societies.
Aspects of diversity include but are not limited to:

    • Ability and disability

    • Age

    • Bilingualism and multiculturalism/English language learners

    • Body size and condition

    • Customs and traditions

    • Educational, disciplinary, or career status

    • Ethnicity, race, national origin, or cultural identity

    • Gender, gender identity, and gender expression

    • Geographical background and location

    • Indigenous or immigration status or identity

    • Marital status, relational status (including singlehood), and family structure or identity

    • Objective and subjective worldviews and standpoints

    • Political ideologies and affiliations

    • Religion/no religion, spirituality and affiliations, and faith

    • Sexual orientation, identities, and expressions

    • Socioeconomic status, residential status, social class, employment, and national service

Note: The aspects are listed alphabetically, but not in any order of priority.

NCFR realizes that various aspects of identity and recognition continue to emerge over time. Thus, this list will likely be expanded as emergence occurs. The enhanced understanding of diversity and inclusion in National Council on Family Relations guides us to greater excellence in scholarship, research, practice, and outreach to larger societies.
