    Denver, CO

    Salary Range: $60,000 - $70,000

    The Special Education Coordinator assists in managing the on-grounds education program as part of the total treatment offered children and families at Tennyson Center for Children (TCC). Oversees the implementation of special education policies and procedures and is responsible for the quality of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) paperwork. Works with representatives from school districts to ensure the IEP meets their expectations and documentation requirements. Tracks IEP due dates and deadlines and schedules meetings to ensure there is ample time to prepare. Assists with annual Facility Report to the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) including the school improvement plan. Coordinate with CDE and Cognia (formerly AdvancED) to ensure compliance with state requirements and standards, including monitoring visits and accreditation. Provides supervision and programmatic support to the education staff, including direct supervision of special education teachers and/or special service providers.

    Responsibilities

    • Trains and supports teachers and special service providers with the IEP paperwork and processes.
    • Reviews and finalizes teachers' IEPs to ensure accuracy of details and thorough documentation.
    • Participates in the agency Quality Assurance (QA) program.
    • Demonstrate competence in the provision of instructional and therapeutic services.
    • Serves as designee for the Special Education Director at IEPs, Utilization Reviews or other meetings at the director's request.
    • Facilitate Initial and Reevaluation IEP meetings.
    • Supervision of assigned education staff to include ongoing, consistent supervision and evaluation.
    • Administer, score, and interpret diagnostic educational assessments including the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, 4th Edition (WIAT-4), Behavior Assessment Scale for Children, 3rd Edition (BASC-3), Adaptive Behavior Assessment System, 3rd Edition (ABAS-3), Autism Spectrum Rating Scale (ASRS) and Emotional Disturbance Decision Tree EDDT). Prepare written reports in a professional manner (evaluation reports for IEPs, critical incident reports, etc.)
    • Facilitate planning of Extended School Year documentation and programming.
    • Contribute to Cognia (formerly AdvancED) accreditation including goal development and progress monitoring through planning and data collection.
    • Assists Special Education Director in following federal and state education guidelines and legal requirements. Consult with the Special Education Director and Colorado Department of Education regarding special education law.
    • Assist with writing the teacher handbook.
    • Serves as the liaison with school districts regarding IEPs.
    • Work with Special Education Director to support ongoing professional development.
    • Provides technical assistance to teachers regarding instructional and behavioral interventions. Work closely with assigned teachers and special service providers to design and implement classroom routines and instructional approaches for a classroom as a whole and individualize in order to meet the needs of students.
    • Model instructional techniques and strategies in classrooms.
    • Provide curriculum consultation and instructional support to teachers.
    • Observe teachers regularly and meet with them to provide feedback.
    • Demonstrate leadership in lowering the rate of physical management.
    • Guide teachers to access available instructional resources and the facility curriculum guide.
    • Participate in coordination of teacher training and onboarding.
    • Monitor QA benchmarks and participate in meetings as requested.
    • Request records and transcripts for students. Track district and facility graduation requirements and update quarterly.

    Education and Experience Equivalencies

    • Master's degree in Special Education, School Psychology or related field with expertise in managing the IEP process and deadlines.
    • Valid license with Colorado Department of Education required.
    • Teaching experience with special needs populations and an understanding of educational needs of students with Serious Emotional Disabilities.
    • Experience managing school personnel, educational programming and IEPs required.
    • Qualified to administer the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, 5th Edition (WISC-5) is a bonus.
    • Competency in administrative tasks in Infinite Campus preferred.

    Physical and Mental Requirements

    TCC requires that persons providing direct care of children be able to perform physical restraints or containment's with an aggressive, physically acting-out child (age by being able to:

    • Wrap his/her arms around the young person to immobilize the arms.
    • Maintain a firm bear-hug hold around the child from behind.
    • Have adequate strength and flexibility to hold the child while the adult drops to his/her knees, lowering the weight of the child backwards to the floor.
    • Support own weight above the young person while securing lower legs (to prevent kicking) or maintain a firm hold of the wrists/arms of the child along the child's sides.
    • Assume a restraint for periods of time varying from 5-30 minutes.
