    Duties and Responsibilities

    This internship is located in Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

    The Division seeks to strengthen international cooperation for social development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work, as well as the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and persons marginalized from society and development.

    The intern will work under the supervision of and report to the Social Affairs Officer in the Programme on Youth Unit (PYU) of the Social Inclusion and Participation Branch (SIPB).The intern will contribute to research, communication, and the development of knowledge products on topics related to youth development, such as the digital transition, social protection, food security, poverty alleviation, health, quality education, decent work, sustainable communities, climate action, and the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).


    Tasks may include, but are not limited to:

    • Assisting with relevant activities of International Youth Day 2024. This includes communication and outreach, research, and the development of knowledge products focused on the role of technologies and data in accelerating progress toward SDGs and the role of young people in advancing the digital transition. These knowledge products consist of case study infographics, interactive online quizzes, social media toolkits, etc. The target audiences of these products are Member States, UN entities, young people, and other stakeholders of youth development.
    • Conducting research and gathering data for the Secretary General's Report on Programmes and Policies Involving Youth to be submitted to the Commission for Social Development. The research will focus on SDG Localization and Youth Development, specifically in the areas of social protection, poverty alleviation, food security, health, quality education, decent work, sustainable communities, and climate action. Data from UN entities and Member States will need to be gathered and analyzed to support the development of this Report.
    • Assisting with organizing and reporting on a workshop focused on localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The outcome of this work will be used to develop a youth-focused compendium of good policies, practices and processes to support the development and promotion of a guidance note on the localization of the SDGs.
    • Conducting research in the areas of focus of the United Nations Inter-Agency Network on Youth Development in preparation for the 2025 ECOSOC Youth Forum.
    This internship is designed to be full-time. A part-time work schedule may be considered under exceptional circumstances.

    Duties will be carried out in a hybrid manner (both at
    UNHQin New York, as well as telecommuting from within the duty station).The internship will begin with an initial duration of 2 months, with the opportunity of an extension for up to a total of 6 months.

    Qualifications/special skills


    Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent).

    Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.

    However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

    Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.

    D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Programme.

    Languages

    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
