    Default job background
    Description

This position is eligible to be remote or a hybrid (DC Headquarters) role.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a global, nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., working to improve environmental sustainability, human health, and resilience in the built environment through its programs and rating systems including LEED. Today, people in over 150 countries and territories live, work, and learn in LEED certified buildings, communities, and cities that protect health, climate, and natural resources, and enhance quality of life.

GBCI is the premier certification body responsible for global delivery and quality oversight of green building and green business sustainability standards. Its integrated team of green building specialists administers credentials and certifications for the U.S. Green Building Council (LEED), the International WELL Building Institute (WELL Building Standard), International Finance Corporation (EDGE), PEER, SITES, TRUE Zero Waste, and IREE.

Today, people know that if they are in a LEED-certified building, they are using less energy and water, saving on maintenance costs, improving indoor air quality, offering comfort to their occupants, and creating less environmental burden on their community. They also know that they are in a building that enhances their health and wellness. USGBC focuses on our relevant and reimagined vision that healthy people in healthy places equals a healthy economy.

The Director of Operations and Enablement will ensure that departmental strategies and plans are devised nationally with an optimized workflow and implemented locally and regionally.

Reporting directly to the U.S. Managing Director and working closely with U.S. MT&D staff members and cross-functional departments, the Director of Operations and Enablement will be an integral part of the effort to drive and realize growth. This position will provide internal focus essential to supporting a thriving and growing department, including delivery of high-value and quality engagements, client-oriented market development strategies and tools, and streamlined operational processes that meet USGBC standards and enable team success. The Director will utilize business intelligence to optimize decisions and solve problems.

The Director will be responsible for facilitating strategic planning by determining and aligning priorities across the team. In collaboration with the Operations and Enablement direct reports, the Director will oversee operational processes within the team to ensure effective resource allocation, financial management, and compliance with USGBC-wide policies and best practices. This position will perform ongoing assessments to ensure the departmental strategies, structures, and work plans are aligned and optimized for delivery against USGBC's institutional priorities and remain responsive to evolving trends and external needs. Further, the Director will ensure consistent and accurate fiscal oversight, and raise the bar for personnel management, data collection, volunteer governance, and partnerships. The Director will manage a small team of individuals that will support this work.

This Director will ensure clear communication channels to enable access to information, tools, and resources, and will facilitate communication feedback loops that infiltrate all levels of the department. In tandem, this position will serve as a leading voice externally to share progress with outward key constituents. The Director will serve as a liaison with cross-functional leads in other departments to ensure strong collaboration across projects and timely sharing of information. This position will also manage department-level professional development to grow team knowledge, expertise, and skills.

    Specific Responsibilities:

    • Provide leadership and oversight to general business operations, including fiscal management, administrative functions, and human resources.
    • Lead department implementation of operational policies, procedures, and business practices, including staff training, annual revisions, and process improvement in collaboration with cross-functional departments.
    • Partner with the Managing Director to implement the annual budgeting process as set forth by the Finance department.
    • Drive execution and develop resource allocation recommendations to align with priorities.
    • Promote employee engagement, team, and people development (including investing meaningfully in the development of junior staff), DEI, and culture-building opportunities.

    • Ensure the development and institutionalization of optimum sales effectiveness for all assigned USGBC/GBCI products.
    • Strengthen and widen USGBC's presence through local and regional partnerships with like-minded organizations.
    • Curate enablement-focused training curriculum, and ongoing education initiatives through a blend of classroom, virtual, recorded, and onsite instruction.
    • Assure a healthy network of volunteer leadership through strong communication, clear and consistent roles, and strengthening a leadership pipeline by leveraging engagements.
    • Support the data and technology needs for the development and tracking of key metrics to meet departmental and organizational goals.
    • Aid in change management and adoption/utilization of emerging processes and technologies.
