    About the Department

    The Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Met is currently engaged in a significant project involving the design and construction of the new Tang Wing. This project focuses on the assessment and relocation of the museum's extensive collection of modern and contemporary art, consisting of over 12,000 objects, including paintings, sculptures, decorative art, and time-based media.

    General Statement of Responsibilities & Duties:

    As the Collections Manager/Registrar, this role will play a pivotal part in orchestrating the movement and assessment of artworks to an offsite location in preparation for the Tang Wing construction. Working closely with departmental leaders, you will oversee various activities related to the care and evaluation of the collections throughout the Tang Wing renovation.

    This position is defined by an established end-date or timeframe.

    Primary Responsibilities & Duties:

    • Collaborate with the collections team and registrar department to strategize the movement of artworks onsite and offsite during the initial phase of the Tang Wing project.
    • Manage the transportation, security, and documentation for the transfer of artworks to and from the museum.
    • Lead the budget oversight for the relocation process.
    • Supervise a team of two direct reports.
    • Coordinate viewings of stored collections for evaluation by various stakeholders.
    • Work with external staff involved in the assessment and relocation process.
    • Update collection data in the museum's system and maintain associated documentation.
    • Prepare and organize collections documentation digitally and physically.
    • Flexibility to work across multiple locations.
    • Additional assigned duties.

    Education & Experience:

    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in museum collections.
    • Bachelor's (BA/BFA) degree required; Master's (MA) in Museum Studies or Collections Management preferred.
    • Demonstrated expertise in museum collections management.
    • Proven team management experience.
    • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficiency in collections management databases, particularly TMS.
    • Knowledge of archival materials and collections care best practices.
    • Experience in handling and moving 3-dimensional artworks.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
    • Capability to work both independently and collaboratively.
    • Familiarity with software like TMS, Adobe Suite, and Microsoft Office.

    Compensation Range:

    • Salary Range: $85,000 - $95,000 annually.
    • The advertised salary range represents a general guideline and may vary based on individual qualifications and factors such as experience and education level.

    Location Requirements:

    Employees must be based within commuting distance of the Museum, covering states like New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania, enabling daily travel to and from the Museum.
