Senior Animal Technician

BREEDING & COLONY MAINTENCE:  Maintained and breed 10-20 different strains of mice including knock-out/ knock-in, yellow fluorescent protein and strains for Autism. This included setting up breeding pairs and maintaining breeding pairs and breeding sets, weaning pups, keeping track of colony lines and genetic drift. Kept meticulous records on breeding lines and pair groups. 

ANIMAL HEALTH & WELL BEING:  Conducted routine and daily health checks on mice and rats to ensure health, well-being, and psychological enrichment. Wrote up detailed health reports and served as a liaison between veterinarians and scientists for the communication of the health and treatment protocols of animals. 

MAINTENCE OF ANIMAL ROOMS:  Made sure all equipment in animal rooms was working effectively. This included checking on ventilation, water lines for automatic water system, rack filters, light dark cycles, Clidox bottles are properly dated, well stocked personal protective equipment, and negative/ positive air flow. Ensure correct health status of rooms was observed working from clean to dirty. Packaged Sentinel animals for routine testing, to ensure the current health status of each rooms. 

ANIMAL PROCEDURES:  Conducted retro orbital bleeds on mice, tail vein injections, genotyping, ear tagging, and anesthesia monitoring. 

LAB MANAGEMENT:  Kept track of scheduling and submitting time charges for anesthesia machine, CO2 and other equipment and supplies for investigators as well as for animal procedures performed.

RESEARCH: Studied all stages of angiogenesis and blood flow in cancer using ultrasound imaging in mouse model systems. This included the initial ordering, injecting cancer cells, daily observation, cancer tumor measurement and histology. 

ANIMAL CARE & USE: Anesthesia, tail vein catheterization, euthanasia, and collection of tissue samples for histology. 

LAB MANAGEMENT: Worked with the Small Animal Imaging Facility (SAIF) as well as animal managers of other animal facilities to ensure the highest standards were maintained in the animal housing facility. Lab management and maintenance for inspections, radiation standards, and health standards. Wrote grants and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols.

Research Assistant (Graduate School Practicum)

ANIMAL PROCEDURES: Performed anesthetic intubations while monitoring temperature and heart rate for surgical procedures using confocal imaging to measure axon regeneration in mouse models of spinal cord injury. 

ANIMAL CARE & HUSBANDRY: Daily monitoring and care of post-surgical animals, maintained mouse colonies, including breeding and isolating particular mice expressing yellow fluorescence protein (YFP).  Performed pre and post-surgical care for mice approved for experiments involving motor neuron axon and synaptic connections between the muscle fibers of the spinal cord. 

HISTOLOGY: Whole mount immunohistochemistry and staining of slides containing murine spinal cords and muscle tissues. 

TRAINING & SUPERVISORY: Trained graduate students and other lab members on a variety of animal related procedures, such as mouse intubations, animal restraint, and histology sectioning. Wrote grants and IACUC procedures, maintained lab member health records, designed and maintained website.

Research Assistant

RESEARCH: Performed, assisted, and oversaw experiments supporting research on the effects of narcotics on the brain and  immune system.  This included writing protocols, creating training manuals and standard operating procedures, administering drugs to rats and mice, performing surgeries, collecting behavioral data, performing serology and ELISAs, and brain histology. 

ANIMAL CARE & PROCEDURES: Responsible for all aspects of animal care and use as related to the lab and experimentation.  This included behavioral monitoring, ensuring the highest ethical standards were maintained, working with the IACUC, using a stereotaxic frame to surgically implant a cannula for intracerebroventricular (icv) drug administration and/or intracerebral (ic) microinjection studies in rodents.  Another surgery was implanting radio transmitters in rodent abdomens to monitor body temperature.

HISTOLOGY: Performed histology on all animals used in experiments.  This included removing the brain, taking thin slices, preserving them for histology, staining taking thin slices of the brain, mounting then reviewing the histology slices against an atlas to ensure correct cannula placement.

Laboratory Maintenance: maintained lab equipment, ensured all chemicals were stored according to drug specifications and safety sheets, as well as adhering to the specifications set by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

SUPERVISORY: Responsible for training and overseeing the computer assistant, administrative, lab staff and graduate students.
