Per CCR 249.3, this job control may be used to fill subsequent vacancies.
Under close supervision of the Agriculture Program Supervisor I, the incumbent performs more routine preparatory and quality control duties associated with the release of sterile fruit flies. The incumbent will work with Supervisor/Leads while preparing assignments and reports according to program recommendations.
• Recognize and screen traps for target pests, such as, but not limited to, Mediterranean, Mexican, Oriental and melon fruit flies.
• Examine Medflies and Mexflies submitted from various trapping devices for the presence of dye through the use of stereomicroscope, blacklight, light magnifier and forceps.
• Separate Medfly and Mexfly specimens from other non-target insects found in samples submitted from McPhail traps and stored in isopropyl alcohol.
• Submit suspect flies and other pest to lead for secondary inspection.
• Assist in the accurate organization of data concerning trap and fly counts.
• Follow an established routine work schedule and process.
• Maintain equipment and supplies needed for identification process.
• Organize recyclable trapping materials.
• Perform routine lab maintenance and cleaning.
• Operate and maintain a motor vehicle safely and responsibly.
• Transport traps from various field stations to the Identification Section.
• Document hours worked and provide to supervisor or lead at the end of each day.
• Submit daily work summaries to supervisor or lead at the end of each day or when requested for reporting purposed.
• Relay information from supervisor or lead to other employees at the office.
• Ensure all formal original documents are complete and have signatures.
• Ensure all time sheets, sign-in sheets, exposure records and other official documents are sent to supervisor or lead in a timely manner.
• Complete online CDFA University mandatory training as required.
Candidates may perform these essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions
The duties of this position are primarily conducted indoors. The Medfly PRP offices are housed in modular trailers and furnished with desks, chairs, and office equipment. The Agricultural Technician I's (Identification) work area includes a folding table, a chair, a dissecting stereomicroscope, an ultraviolet lamp, a white light lamp, and various dissecting tools such as forceps and probes.
The incumbent will be required to drive and must have a safe driving record as documented by the Department of Motor Vehicles. (A safe driving record is one free from convictions in the past two years for repeated moving violations, or a single serious violation, such as drunk driving or reckless driving).
The incumbent must be able to apply pesticides, haul loads of fruit and/or remove trees, perform survey work, work well under extreme time constraints, exercise
good judgment, determine priorities, make appropriate well-thought out decisions, allocate staff and resources to achieve maximum results, maintain focus under conditions of duress, and provide accurate assessment of rapidly changing situations (ex: multiple exotic pest detections requiring multiple operations). The incumbent must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work, cooperate with other staff members and leads in completing assigned work, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, with other agencies and the public, and be able to meet required deadlines.
The work schedule is non-standard and the employee may be assigned days off other than Saturday and Sunday. Employee may work weekends, holidays, and overtime when necessary, and be required to travel statewide for extended periods with little notice.
Travel by State vehicle or other public transportation system to various locations in the project area, and potentially statewide, is required on an occasional basis.
