    This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, hourly, intermittent, limited duration or regular status (as needed) Ship's Able Mariner positions in the Ship Operations unit within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University.

    These positions will be located in Newport, Oregon.


    The Able Mariner (AB) is one of three able seaman positions which functions to assist the Chief/First Mate on Oregon State University Research Vessels in the maintenance and repair of the vessel and its deck equipment, and to assist the mate on watch in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.

    Due to the classification and tonnage of the Taani, the Coast Guard requires that AB positions on the vessel be filled by a mix of AB Special and AB limited licenses.


    The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system.

    It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and two oceanographic research vessels, the 199-foot ocean-going Taani and the 54-foot coastal research vessel Elakha.

    The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies.

    It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include M.S. and Ph.
    D. degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and a M.S. degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs.

    Key Responsibilities

    35% -Stands watch as helmsman/visual and radar lookout/winch operator at sea. Stands security watch in ports other than home port.

    30% - Cleans, paints, and maintains ship's hull, decks, bulkheads, equipment, masts, quarters, heads and tanks.

    Assists in mooring and unmooring the vessel; with line handling during docking and undocking; with the deployment and recovery of instrumentation and equipment; and in rigging and handling scientific gear.

    Loads and unloads equipment and stores.

    20% - Operates ship's equipment such as winches, crane, boat, davits, anchor windlass, capstan, etc. May be asked to assist with shoreside operations involving forklifts, crane picks, rigging, yard storage, and equipment/general maintenance.

    10% - Rigs, splices, and handles wire rope and synthetic lines.

    5% - Actively participates in shipboard drills and emergency training, including training ashore. Assists in maintaining firefighting, lifesaving and safety equipment. Fights fires and administers First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) when required. Other duties as assigned.

    What We Require


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    High School Diploma (or equivalent) and six months of maritime experience.


    LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:

    • Merchant Mariner's Credential with an endorsement of Able Seaman, Special, or higher issued by the Coast Guard
    • STCW endorsements as appropriate for this position.
    • Ability to obtain a passport
    • Ability to read, speak, and write in English
    • Meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements
    What You Will Need


    • Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats.
    • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
    • RFPNW Endorsement.
    • VPDSD Endorsement.
    What We Would Like You to Have


    • Merchant Mariner's Credential with an endorsement of Able Seaman Limited, or higher, issued by the Coast Guard.
    • Experience working on a research vessel.
    • Fast Rescue Boat Certificate.
    • Advanced Fire Fighting Certificate.
    • Experience with oceanographic winch and crane operation.
    • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
    Working Conditions / Work Schedule


    The employee in this position is required to work on board OSU operated research vessels at sea on research cruises that may last from one day to three weeks or more before returning to port, in ocean and weather conditions which are highly variable.

    The incumbent must not be incapacitated by sea-sickness.

    The ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 40 pounds is required.

    Ship Operations is a seven day per week operation; therefore, weekend and holiday work may be required. Shift and/or work assignment may change based on operational needs.


    In the event of health risks to the working environment while at sea, Ship Operations may need to require quarantine periods and other health & safety requirements before employees join the vessel or begin work at sea to ensure continuity of business operations.
