Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, hourly, intermittent, limited duration or regular status (as needed) Ship's QMED positions in the Ship Operations unit within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University.
The Ship's QMED assists the Chief Engineer and First Assistant Engineer(s) in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the machinery, mechanical, and electrical systems on all OSU operated research vessels.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system.
It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and two oceanographic research vessels, the 199-foot ocean-going Taani and the 54-foot coastal research vessel Elakha.
The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies.
It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and a M.S. degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs.

Key Responsibilities
60% - Assists in the engine room as directed by the chief engineer.
25% - Assists in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of the ship's machinery; hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, and ballast systems; air conditioning; refrigeration; freshwater and saltwater firefighting system; winches, hoists, blocks, boats/motors, etc., under the direction of more senior engineering personnel. Assists in the change out of equipment.
5% - Updates machinery history log and other records upon overhaul or repair of ship's machinery and equipment. Keeps inventory records, and assists in maintaining stocks of supplies and spare parts for the ship's machinery.
5% - Assists in the installation and at-sea repair of mechanical and electrical scientific equipment under the direction of more senior engineering personnel.
5% - Actively participates in shipboard drills and emergency training, including training ashore. Maintains firefighting and safety equipment, and fights fires, administering First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) when required. Other duties as assigned.

What You Will Need
Mechanical aptitude and basic knowledge of engines, pumps, compressors, hydraulics and other mechanical and electrical systems commonly found on ships.
Experience using basic hand tools.Ability to obtain Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

Prior research vessel or other similar experience.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The employee in this position is required to work on board OSU operated research vessels at sea on research cruises that may last from one day to three weeks or more before returning to port, in ocean and weather conditions which are highly variable.
The incumbent must not be incapacitated by sea-sickness.The ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
Ship Operations is a seven day per week operation; therefore, weekend and holiday work may be required. Shift and/or work assignment may change based on operational needs.
In the event of health risks to the working environment while at sea, Ship Operations may need to require quarantine periods and other health & safety requirements before employees join the vessel or begin work at sea to ensure continuity of business operations.
